....focuses on the admirals who commanded the US Navy task forces that took part in major battles at sea across the globe, some of which they won and some of which they lost. Tuohy analyses the stratagy and the challenging desicions made by Admirals in the heat of battle. As well as covering all the principle admirals in the major campaigns of WW2, Tuohy looks in detail at the heritage that informed and built their combat personailities and the training that gave them the tools for the job. Comprehesive and very well written - almost cinematic in some places - it is recommended for anyone interested in naval combat leadership or the US Navy in general. The names of the men profiled - with warts and all, detailing their clashes over strategies and tactics as well as limitations - are truly legendary, including Nomitz, Spruance, Halsey and Mitscher, to name but a few. The vastness of the Pacific provided such men with an opportunity to conduct combat operations on a scale never seen before or since. Tuohy, while revealing a less sure touch when discoussing British naval events, has nonetheless produced a superb account of the US Navys WWII titans and their achivments. --Warship International Fleet Review
