George Green Shackelford is professor emeritus of history at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is the author of Jefferson's Adoptive Son: The Life of William Short and George Wythe Randolph and the Confederate Elite, the editor of Collected Papers of the Monticello Association, Vols. I & II, and the founding curator of two historic house museums.
