Whilst not showing impatience in establishing h°s household in the Castle, Francesco Sforza had not however neglected to occupy himself concerning the garden, enclosed in the confines of the defences, called Ghirlanda which extended towards the North-west, reaching up to the part today oc cupied by the Race-course of San Sim. Rather than a garden, it was a large farm, called $archo, on which was cultivated, com, rye, millet, oats, and which was part meadows and part orchards: as it was situated within the coniines of the wall it was possible to breed there, deer, hares, goats, falcons, crane, and partridges; and so the Duke in order to contest a tendency towards obesity, with which he was threatened in the last years of his life, was always to be found on horseback in the Barcho, which was a locality well adapted for hunting.
