Our society values good inventions by buying them or investing in the people and companies that make them. If you are reading this book it is likely that you have had a few ideas brewing and are wondering what the next step might be. We hope to share with you one option, inventing online. The main benefit to online inventing is the savings. Because these companies do all the work for you, they will keep the largest share, but your earnings will be significant, from 30% to 50%. Getting a patent, trademark, and copyright can be expensive, involve lawyers, time, and is essentially a full time job. Most people simply do not have that kind of time or collateral to invest in their idea properly. There are provisional patents that are inexpensive, but offer little long term protection and expire in one year. Then consider the production of an original working prototype. Even if all goes well, only about 3% of patents make it to market according to the US patent office. The authors of this book have experience inventing and using the online sites discussed here. Though our focus is on examining Quirky.com and Edison Nation, much of what is contained will apply to any reputable online invention submission site. Eric Gibbons, owner and founder of Firehouse Publishing and Firehouse Gallery is a 2005 Invention Quest Finalist, with his product, the Digi Dot, which was sold nationwide for a time. He is a prolific artist with figurative paintings in collections worldwide including The Obama Whitehouse, and is represented by seven galleries in the USA. His talents include original compositions for piano, a mastery of origami, and double certifications in education. Carla Leming is a licensed cosmetologist who runs her own salon. She recently received the title of "Quirky Inventor" for one of her chosen ideas, and also has three product development agreements signed with GeniusCrowds.com. One of her Genius Crowds inventions, The Speed Bather, was licensed to PetEdge.com and it should be in their catalog of retail pet products by the end of 2012. Matthew Murrie is an English Professor at Westminster College and author of six books, the latest being Every Day on Earth and While You Were Sleeping, both published by Scholastic. He has been a member of Quirky since 2011 and submits ideas through his real name. He is also a member of TeamLab, a team formed by four Quirky members. Stacey Ritchie is an educator and recipient of Learning for Life’s Golden Apple Award. She has been influencing on Quirky since September 2010 and is an active member. Pete "Wolf" is a prolific inventor, and we are extremely honored to have his input in this publication.
