This is regarded as an important feminist novel, published by the author under a male pseudonym. "The tale centres round an ordinary Boer farm and depicts the hard, coarse, unlovely life of some of the Afrikander peasant farmers . the work is certainly the most notable volume of fiction relating to South Africa undertaken up to this period by any writer of South African birth and education." (Mendelssohn, p.281). This first edition was published in an edition of 300 copies. Since it caused a sensation, first edition copies were often widely read and circulated, with expected wear and loss to the books. Here is the 2-volume first edition fabulously bound by the renowned binders Sangorski & Sutcliff in truly stunning full black ostrich skin with gilt top edge and marbled endpapers. The condition of the binding is virtually as new. The contents are remarkably crisp, clean, and bright with no spotting or previous ownership marks.
