The present manuscript is of the smaller, single column variety of Wycliffite NTs, intended for personal private use. Though without the Gospels, the MS at hand is more extensive than many comparable examples, considering the inclusion of the Ten Commandments and the prefatory text of Old Testament Lesson and Epistles (Use of Sarum [Salisbury], for the Temporale and Sanctorale), of which Lindberg only noted 24 known copies. Approximately 160mm x 120mm. 406 leaves, generally in quires of 8 leaves, likely small loss after fol. 169. Although the Early Modern foliation of the manuscript runs to 413, it contains several errors, including a jump from 329 to 340 without any leaves missed in between (so that there are no leaves numbered 330-339). With contemporary quire and leaf signatures. Ruled in a violet-brown ink. Single column. 22 lines. Copied by a single scribe (except Ten Commandments) in red and brown ink in a highly legible and skilled textualis (textura) hand: a professional scribe. Catchwords regularly boxed in red. Unflourished paraph marks throughout text in blue; line fillers in blue and red; unflourished smaller initials throughout in blue; large pen-flourished initials throughout in blue and red; with pen-flourished sprays and bar decoration to form borders. Later vellum binding. Part of Acts displaced as an accident in binding. Noted in a slightly later hand. Some touching in outer margins. Some initials rubbed. Some fading to ink, occasionally dramatic. The central text of the very early English Reformation movement, in the first translation of the entire Bible in English (Middle English). Exact contents are: Lessons & Epistles; Ten Commandments; Acts of the Apostles; Pauline Epistles (including the Letter to the Laodiceans); Canonical Epistles; Apocalypse. The Harry Walton copy: the Wycliffite MS of the late Harry A. Walton of Covington, Virginia, known in his collection as ÒWhite Oak Dairy A-2.Ó MS bears shelfmark ÒA2Ó in red ink on the front pastedown. Ex-Sam Fogg (London).
