FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF ULYSSES, ONE OF ONLY 250 COPIES SIGNED BY BOTH JAMES JOYCE AND HENRI MATISSE; one of the most celebrated books of the twentieth century. The Limited Editions Club’s Ulysses is the first illustrated Ulysses and “one of the very few American livres de peintres issued before World War II. According to George Macy, who undertook this only American publication of Matisse's illustrations, he asked the artist how many etchings the latter could provide for five thousand dollars. The artist chose to take six subjects from Homer's Odyssey. The preparatory drawings reproduced with the soft-ground etchings (Matisse's only use of this medium) record the evolution of the figures from vigorous sketches to closely knit, if less spontaneous, compositions" (The Artist and the Book, 197). Illustrated by Matisse with twenty-six plates, consisting of six soft-ground etchings, printed by hand, and twenty lithographic drawings, made as studies for the etchings, printed on thin colored papers. One of only 250 copies signed by both Joyce and Matisse (the remaining 1250 copies of the edition were signed only by Matisse). New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935. Quarto, original brown buckram embossed in gold on front cover and spine from a design by LeRoy H. Appleton; top edge sprinkled brown, others uncut; original slipcase. Minor wear to slipcase. Descrizione libro: NY: Limited Editions Club, 1935, 1935. NY: Limited Editions Club, 1935, first Matisse edition, one of 1500 numbered copies signed in pencil by Henri Matisse on the justification page. Illustrated with 6 hors-texte original soft-ground etchings (Duthuit 235-240), printed in black, + 20 photolithographic plates of drawings on yellow and blue paper. 11.5 x 9 inches, 420 pages. Internally bright, no foxing, just very minor creasing to front and rear pages; in a modern slipcase. "One of the very few American livres de peintres issued before World War II. The preparatory drawings reproduced with the soft-ground etchings (Matisse's only use of this medium) record the evolution of the figures from vigorous sketches to closely knit, if less spontaneous, compositions" - "The Artist & The Book" 197. Other references: Duthuit 6; Skira 257; American Livre de Peintre 32; Slocum & Cahoon A22. From a Sotheby's catalogue: "The text of this edition of Ulysses has recently gained added prominence in the so-called "Joyce Wars" being cited as an important "approved" edition published in Joyce's lifetime allegedly ignored or downplayed in the establishing of a corrected text". And Christie's (London): "The text of the present edition is taken from the second impression of the Odyssey Press edition published in Hamburg in 1933, which was revised by Stuart Gilbert, and Slocum and Cahoon wrote in 1953, 'is therefore the most accurate text [.] that has been published in the United States'. The American editions that preceded it were the pirated -- and corrupt -- 'ninth' edition published by Samuel and Max Roth in 1929, and the first authorized American edition (published by Random House in 1934) which was based on Roth's piracy and added some fresh errors. The present edition (which precedes by one year the first edition printed in England) was therefore the best published in America during Joyce's lifetime, with his authority, and under his supervision". Descrizione libro: 1935. MATISSE, Henri. Ulysses. By James Joyce. [xvii], 363, [3] pp. Illustrated with 6 soft-ground etchings and 20 reproductions hors texte on papers of different colour and size by Henri Matisse. Folio, 298 x 230 mm, bound in publisher's brown cloth. Preserved in brown half morocco box. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935. Limited to 1500 copies signed by Matisse. The Matisse Ulysses, designed by George Macy for members of The Limited Editions Club, is the most famous book from the LEC list. "The text of this edition was based on that of the Odyssey Press edition, second impression, and is therefore the most accurate text of Ulysses that has been published in the United States" (Slocum and Cahoon). It is interesting to note that Matisse chose to illustrate the Homeric subtext of Joyce's story rather than the novel's Dublin setting. Matisse found that Joyce's text was too difficult to translate visually, and so sought to capture the book's spirit instead. This, he felt, was best conveyed by classical images in shades of grey. Matisse also decided to include his preparatory drawings for the six etchings, reproduced on coloured papers, to add heft and colour to the book. The present volume is also one of the very few American livres de peintres issued before WWII. The Limited Editions Club Ulysses includes the only prints of Matisse published in America, and represent Matisse's only use of soft-ground etching. Signed by Matisse on the colophon. Duthuit 6. SIGNED BY BOTH JOYCE AND MATISSE. First Illustrated Edition with six soft-ground etchings and twenty reproductions of preliminary drawings on yellow and blue paper (mild foxing to extreme edges of etchings, contemporary bookplate, and endpapers). Descrizione libro: Limited Editions Club, New York:, 1935. Original Brown Cloth Gilt. Condizione libro: Fine. Henri Matisse. (illustratore). Limited Edition. Folio. Ulysses. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935. With six original soft-ground etchings by Henri Matisse and twenty reproductions of preliminary drawings by Matisse. Number 113 of 1500 numbered copies and oneof only 250 copies SIGNED BY BOTH JAMES JOYCE AND HENRI MATISSE. Joyce was initially pleased that an artist of Matisse's stature was to illustrate Ulysses. But after some consideration, Joyce was worried that the Frenchman might not be familiar enough with the Irish terrain to do the job. He attempted to have a friend in Ireland send the artist an illustrated weekly from Dublin around 1904. When he discovered that Matisse had not even read the book, but instead depicted six episodes from Homer's Odyssey, Joyce flew into a rage and refused to sign any more copies. Original gilt-pictorial brown cloth, cover image bright. A very beautiful copy. The slipcase is clean and strong. Codice libro della libreria 884516

Descrizione libro: New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935, 1935. Quarto. Original brown cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to upper board gilt. With the glassine dust jacket. Housed in the publisher's card slipcase and cloth portfolio. Some minor spotting to one of the plates, glassine chipped to edges, slipcase lightly rubbed. 21 monochrome illustrations on coloured paper. 6 original, signed etchings by Matisse housed loosely in the publisher's portfolio. First Matisse edition. One of only 250 copies signed by both Matisse and Joyce from a total edition of 1500 copies. Loosely inserted is the publisher's postcard stating that the recipient will receive a copy signed by both men. Included are etchings by Matisse depicting the Calypso, Aeolus, Cyclops, Nausicaa, Circe, and Ithaca episodes. With an introduction by Stuart Gilbert, who at Joyce's request edited the Odyssey Press edition of this novel, which became the copy text for all subsequent life time editions of Ulysses. Designed by George Macy, this is the twelfth and final title in the sixth series of the Limited Editions Club books. After much prodding, Macy induced Henri Matisse to produce a series of original illustrations for this new edition of Ulysses. "These plates," Matisse wrote, "are the product of my mind as I rested it in contemplation of Mr Joyce's work". He further stated that they were among his most successful works in the graphic arts. They constitute the only American publication of Matisse's illustrations. Codice libro della libreria 79543
