Excerpt: ...in those times, when the ponderous weapons inereased the power of a warrior's arm, to sever with one blow the head of the bull from the trunk, was dcemed the perfection of the art; and it was often done by those who bad both strength and skill. Paredes entered the arena, carrying a huge, long sword--tpadone--on his left shoulder, dressed in a tight eorset of buffalo skin, with uneovered head. He saw that the bull had been wounded, and was losing blood; henee ho beekoned to the pursuivants, and ealled for a fresh one. The fatigued bull having been lassoed, and pulled away, they opened one of the small stables, and another of larger frame and of more feroeious appearanee burst forth. Emerging from darkness into the open, dazzling light of the sun, exasperated and furious, the bull dashed forward, tearing up the ground around the lists, as sueh animals are wont, until pereeiving his antagonist, ho halted before him, lowered his head, roaring, and with the length of his tongue hanging out of his mouth, he looked as if ho was taking a position; ho baeked, and with its forefeet pawed the sand into a eloud that enveloped his neek and baek. Gareia's strength was great; but it would have been dangerous to try it with a bull whoso forehead was armed with horns of unusual length, and with a neek so wide and so bulky as to fear no attaek; the Spaniard saw the need of extreme eaution. With both hands lifting his spadone over the left, and with the left foot stamping the ground twiee or three times, ho shouts nt the beast: " ah! ah!" The bull, lowering his horns, rushes upon his enemy; the latter, just as ho is aeeosted, falls baek on one side and bestows upon the bull's neek a blow from his spadone with so mueh nerve, and so well aimed, that the...
