For freight car historians, enthusiasts and modelers, the Burlington Northern was a treasure chest of equipment designs. The huge northwest forest products industry was reflected in the initial Burlington Northern freight car fleet. The pre-merger fleets provided large numbers of 50-foot box cars, wood chip gondolas and lumber flats. The Burlington Northern also had a well-maintained fleet of temperature-controlled cars and a large fleet of grain hoppers. With the development of coal production in the Powder River Basin the coal car fleet expanded greatly. The Burlington Northern acquired nearly 34,000 new-built cars during it's time. After two and a half decades, in 1995, the BN era ended with the Santa Fe merger. The Green freight cars ended and new and repainted cars appeared in 'BNSF brown'. Contents: Box Cars, pp. 4-39; Covered Hoppers, pp. 40-63; Flat Cars, pp. 64-67; Gondolas, pp. 68-84; Open Hoppers, pp. 85-91; Intermodal, pp. 92-99; Temperature Controlled Cars, pp. 100-111; Tank Cars, pg. 112; Auto Racks, pp. 113-116; Non Revenue Cars, pp. 117-120; Passenger Cars, pp. 121-128. Hard cover with jacket, 128 pages, 8.5 x 11 x .5 in., all color photographs with captions.
