Hardcover. Condizione: VG+. Condizione sovraccoperta: VG. Photos, Maps (illustratore). 1st. Lieutenant-Colonel Schoullars' contribution to the prolifc series of NZ WWII official histories covers one of the pivotal campaigns of the war in North Africa, which halted Rommel's drive to capture Egypt preceeding the eventual turn of tide with the defeat of the Axis at Alamein. Such was the naturue of the crisis facing the demoralised Allied forces that units of the NZ Division resting and refitting in Syria, after intensive fighing of the Libyan Desert, were recalled to the defensive line west of Cairo. Not only were the British forces dispirited after suffering reverses, but there was also a crisis of the command structure. While mainly examining the role of NZ units in the Summer battles, Schoullar's account also offers a sweeping over-view of the actions of the Eighth Army in this crucial phase of the Desert campaigns leading up to the consolidation of the Alemein line and the break through there that led to the defeat of the Axis in North Africa. "Battle For Egypy" should be required reading for any serious student of the North African Desert war of WWII. First edition of 1955 from the War History Branch NZ Department of Internal Affairs, 400 pages including three appendices, glossary, bibliography and index, illustrated with 59 b/w photos including portraits and frontis, six colour tone fold-out maps, nine maps in text. Red hard covers with gilt spine titles and impressed coat-of-arms to front board are VG+ with small part circle white mark to front, text block is excellent. This copy from a RSA (Returned Services Association) library with stamps to front pastedown and FFEP (also an inked name}, stamps repeated at top edge few pages in text block and at the RFEP and rear pastedown. DJ is VG with small pieces missing at rear spine top edge, upper and lower edges at front flap fold and rear lower edge, short tear front top edge adjacent spine, few chips. This heavy book, just over 1kg unpacked, would require additional postage for international delivery.

Hardcover. Condizione: VG++. Condizione sovraccoperta: VG. Photos, Maps (illustratore). 1st. The activities of 2 NZ Division in the Middle East in the perioid precceeding the Allied offensive at Alamein is important in that it covers the campaign in the vital engagements that held Rommel's advance vituallly to the gates of Cairo and later forced him back from the Alamein battlefield. The book is an significant issue in the prolific NZ official war histories published following the 1939-45 conflict. This account begins in Syria where the Division, minus some some units, was sent for rest and refit after its costly encounters with the Axis forces in the Libyan campaign of late 1941/early 1942. Late in May Rommel attacked the Allies at Alamein with the intention of defeating the Eighth Army and seizing Egypt. The defenders at Alamein managed to halt the enemy, but it was a near-run-thing, creating a crisis not only on the battlefield, but also of command and confidence. At this point the Division was recalled from Syria and while this study concentrates on the part played by NZ units in engagements leading up to preperations for breaking the German/Italian forces it also covers generally the operations of the Eight Army through the period of holding the line to resolving the "crisis of command" which resulted in the replacement of the British top level of command. This was a critical period for the Allied military effort and one which eventually led to the defeat of the Axis in North Africa, but that was then well in the offing. A valuable account f the lead-up to one of the pivotal campaigns of WWII. First edfition of 1955 from the NZ War History Branch, Internal Affairs Department, 400 pages including three appendices, glossary, bibliograqphy and index, illustrated with 59 b/w photos including portraits and frontis, six color tone fold out maps, nine maps in text. Red hard covers with gilt spine titles and impressed coat-of-arms to front board are NF, text block is VG++ as are the folded maps, light foxing marks to vertical and top page edges as closed. No inscriptions. DJ, with photo to front panel, is VG with tiny section missing spine top and base, rear top edge sightly ragged, two short tears top front , few chips. A heavy book at just over 1kg unpacked, would require additional postage for oversesa despatch.
