Francesco Patrizi of Siena (Franciscus Patricius Senensis) (1413-1494) was an Italian political writer and humanist. In De Institutione reipublicae, Patrizi discusses how public speaking may influence the civil discussion and the ability to manipulate people through eloquence and rhetoric to the ends of the state (rather than simply by force alone). Patrizi served as governor of Foligno in the Papal States and bishop of Gaeta. His political writings on had influence on the ideas of civic Humanism and is considered a predecessor of Machiavelli.
