Extremely rare of the first French edition of this digest of the two political works by Francesco Patrizi (1413-1494) marking the first appearance in French – and in any vernacular – of passages from his work on monarchies. Patrizi’s treatises on governments are considered precursors of Macchiavelli’s Prince and have been proven to have served as models for Thomas Elyot’s Governor (1531), yet Patrizi remains a curiously understudied figure.Born in Siena, Patrizi studied alongside Enea Silvio Piccolomini, the future Pope Pius II, and entertained friendships with humanists like Panormita, Filolfo, Tranchedini and Battista Guarino. He entered political life in his native city and served as ambassador to Florence, Rimini, Emperor Frederick III and the Holy See. Implicated in a charge of treason, he was imprisoned, tortured and then exiled. He took on ecclesiastic robes and, when Piccolomini became pope, was pardoned and made Bishop of Gaeta in 1461.Patrizi is "a man of wide interests and broad attainments [who] has never been studied comprehensively." (Schmitt) His literary output is virtually unstudied. In politics, his two main works are De institutione reipublicae, finished between 1465 and 1471, and its counterpart on monarchies, De regno et Regis institutione, written between 1481 and 1484. His political works show off the encyclopedic scope of his studies, covering the arts, sciences, agriculture, commerce, architecture and town planning, gymnastics, horse-riding and hunting, games and theater. Throughout, Patrizi’s approach is practical, investigating the effects these pursuits have on the citizens and rulers of a state, and how they can be employed to maximize the public good. Although the two works appear contradictory, Patrizi’s vote ultimately comes down on the side of republics, and his work on princes is above all a cautionary manual on how to avoid the pitfalls of absolute power. Even in De regno, Patrizi defends freedom and the freedom of opinion.Patrizi’s individualism is tempered by a strong social conscience. He attacks usury and defends the "middle class," as well as servants, whom he writes one should not regard as slaves: no man may enrich himself at the expense of another. His rationalist and pragmatic approach leads to arguments that appear to be well ahead of their time, such as his defense of the right to abortion and contraception. In the judgment of one scholar, he is "typical of the passage from the transcendental medieval world to the naturalism and voluntarism of the Renaissance. Patrizi announces Macchiavelli in many points, who will be better understood when his precedents are illuminated." (Battaglia, p.x) De Reipublicae was widely disseminated in France throughout the sixteenth century, but curiously not in Italy, where it was never published in its entirety. Domenico Bassi suggests that both works were used in schools in France. The first edition of De Reipublicae came out in 1494 and was followed by nine others between 1518 and 1594. The manuscript of De Regis was brought over to France by Jean Prevost, counselor in the Paris parliament, and first published in 1519. French editions of De Reipublicae appeared in 1520 and 1532, but it was not until 1577 that De Regis saw a vernacular edition. "Patrizi [1529-1597] had interests in many different intellectual fields; he published works on poetry, history, rhetoric, literary criticism, metaphysics, ethics, natural philosophy, and mathematics, besides translating a number of Greek works into Latin. His thought is a characteristic blend of Platonism (in the widest sense in which the word is used when referring to the Renaissance) and natural philosophy, with a very strong anti-Aristotelian bent.Patrizi's importance in the history of science rest primarily on his highly original views concerning the nature of space, which have striking similarities to those later developed by Henry More and Isaac Newton.Rejecting the Aristotelian doctrines of horror vaculi and determinate 'place.' Patrizi argued that the physical existence of a void is possible and that space is a necessary precondition to all that exists in it. Space, for Patrizi, was 'merely the simple capacity (aptitudo) for receiving bodies, and nothing else.' It was no longer a category, as it was for Aristotle, but an indeterminate receptacle of infinite extent. His distinction between 'mathematical' and 'physical' space points the way toward later philosophical and scientific theories. The primacy of space (spazio) in Patrizi's system is seen in his Della nuova geometria.In it Patrizi attempted to found a system of geometry in which space was a fundamental, undefined concept the entered into the basic definitions (point, line, angle) of the system. Francesco Patrizi (1413-1492) writer, politician and humanist, was appointed bishop of Gaeta by Pope Pio II in 1460. La obra de Francesco Patrizzi, de Siena, Obispo de Gaeta, publicada originalmente en latín en Paris, Pierre Vidone, 1519, bajo el título «De Regno & Institutione Regis», y tal como registra Thomas Elyot (1490-1546) en su obra ««The Boke Named The Governour», publicada en Londres, 1580, fue junto a «Il Cortegiano» de Castiglione uno de los modelos utilizados por Erasmo para la redacción de su «Institutio Principis Christiani». La traducción al castellano de la obra de Patrizi aparece aquí realizada por Henrique Garcés «vezino de la ciudad de los Reyes, en el Piru», un curioso personaje que declara, en la dedicatoria a Felipe II, haber pretendido siempre ocuparse en Su Servicio «y con mas eficacia quando entendia podia dello redundar algun buen fruto al estado publico», confesando paladinamente que «ansi gasté no poca parte de vida y hazienda en descubrir y entablar en el Pirú el azogue y beneficio de plata con él». En medio del ajetreo de su actividad minera y especulativa se dedica a traducir la presente obra «por parecerme provechoso entretenimiento para herederos de grandes Reynos y Señorios, para que los que nuestro Señor os huviere dado comiencen desde los primeros rudimentos a habituarse en lo que a tan grande estado como les espera conviene». Ha sido el académico peruano Estuardo Núñez quien recientemente hizo luz sobre la figura de Henrique Garcés a quien revela como un lusitano del siglo XVI que estuvo afincado por cerca de cuarenta años en el Virreinato del Perú donde desarrolló una exitosa labor como minero, metalurgista y recaudador de arbitrios, ejerciendo también el negocio de librería y papelería en Lima y siendo a lo largo de toda su vida un activo promotor intelectual. A su regreso a la Península, en 1591, pudo darse el gusto de publicar tres traducciones propias al castellano: de las obras de Petrarca, de Camoens y de Francesco Patrizzi. Estas traducciones van acompañadas de composiciones poéticas propias. En la presente aparece un soneto dedicado a Felipe II en el que se lee: «Assi Señor andais siempre ocupado / en amparar la Fee, que la han corrido / de mil partes, y vos la aveis tenido / en pie, sin della un punto aver faltado». Nervi e titolo manoscritto al dorso, tagli marmorizzati. -- cc. 14 nn., cc. 206. Bellissimo frontis figurato allegorico in xilografia. Capilettera figurati, elegante corsivo. Edizione originale di questa opera sullo stile del principe del Macchiavelli.Tradotta da Giovanni Fabrini da Figline. Oltre alle doti morali, politiche ed economiche del principe, tratta di teatro, musica, ginnastica, gioco della palla, caccia, scacchi, matematica, cosmografia, agricoltura ecc. Una seconda edizione apparve nel 1553 per opera di Paolo Manuzio (Renouard p. 155). L' autore, umanista senese (1413-1492), fu vescovo di Gaeta e governatore di Foligno. Le sue opere ebbero grande diffusione per il loro realismo politico, suscitando anche aspre polemiche. Abbastanza raro, manca a molta bibliografia consultata compreso Adams, Choix, Gamba, Poggiali, Passano, Graesse e Brunet, che ricordano solo l' edizione Aldina del 1553. Manca anche ad Argelati "Volgarizzatori" e al catalogo delle cinquecentine possedute dal Monte dei Paschi di Siena. La grande decorazione del frontis è appena intaccata dal taglio del margine, altrimenti esemplare molto bello nitido e genuino con interessanti note manoscritte coeve in italiano e chiara grafia ai margini bianchi delle prime carte. Natif de Sienne, Francesco Patrizi (1413-1492) fut nommé évêque de Gaète en 1460. Il gouverna ce diocèse jusqu'à sa mort, et fut également un moment gouverneur "civil" de Foligno. C'est un humaniste de la meilleure formation, dont la réflexion tourne autour du gouvernement et de ses conditions d'exercice. Quant à Giovanni Fabrini (1516-1580), il fut surtout grammairien et traducteur, et se fit un nom par un immense travail de vulgarisation des classiques de langue latine, pas seulement ceux de l'Antiquité, mais aussi des auteurs "néo-latins" comme on dit de nos jours où l'on fait mine de découvrir l'extrême richesse de ce domaine des lettres européennes, la quasi-totalité des érudits et savants ayant composé dans cette langue jusqu'au milieu du XVIIe siècle, et bien au-delà. Ex-libris del duque de Medinacelli y Santistebán. * Francesco Patrizi de Siena (Franciscus Patricius Senensis) (1413 – 1494) ocupó altos cargos en Siena antes de ser desterrado por conspiración política en 1457. Se trasladó y fue gobernador de Foligno, luego en los Estados Pontificios. Pío II lo nombró obispo de Gaeta en el mismo año. Es conocido por sus tratados políticos: Reipublicae De institutione (1518) y el que presentamos De regno et regis institutione (1519). El primer capítulo dedica la obra al duque de Calabria Alfonso de Aragón, que será Alfonso I el Magnánimo, primogénito del rey Fernando I. Sus otras obras como escritor humanista, la mayoría inéditas, fueron epítomes, tratados de filosofía, colecciones de poemas en latín y epigramas, discursos diplomáticos, y una historia de Siena.
