Descrizione libro: Boni and Liveright, New York, 1926. Hardcover. First edition, second issue. Foreword by Allen Tate. Near fine in near fine dustwrapper. Hart Crane's own copy of his first book, with his later ownership Signature: "Hart Crane, Aug. '31" and his bookplate on the front pastedown. Apparently Hart Crane's mother either gave away or sold some of his bookplates shortly after his death to Crane's good friend, the bookseller Samuel Loveman, thus resulting in occasional "association copies" surfacing. However, all of the books that we have seen Signed by him (with the exception of the Signed edition of *The Bridge*) were from his personal library. Codice libro della libreria 99654

Descrizione libro: Paris: Black Sun Press, 1930, 1930. First Edition; one of 50 copies printed on Japan vellum, signed by Crane. Connolly 100. By happy coincidence, Evans and Crane met at the Brooklyn Bridge. It was Crane's choice to use these three photographs, previously unpublished, with his poem, a modest collaboration at the time, but now so closely associated as to seem nearly inseparable. A fine copy in the original glassine, and in the publisher's paper-covered slipcase, which has only very minor wear. In a custom quarter-morocco clamshell box. Crane might well have chosen to leap to his death from the iconic bridge, but instead threw himself overboard returning from Cuba just two years later. Codice libro della libreria 25148

Descrizione libro: Horace Liveright, New York, 1930. Hardcover. First American edition, preceded by the very limited French edition. Photograph by Walker Evans. Fine in a very good, spine-faded dustwrapper with a couple of internally repaired short tears. Inscribed by the poet: "For Tom Smith with best wishes, Hart Crane." This edition was extensively revised and corrected following the first privately printed edition of 275 copies published by the Black Sun Press in Paris three months earlier. Smith was the editor-in-chief for the publisher Horace Liveright to whom, some evidence exists, Crane turned to when he was short on funds. Smith picked a succession of best sellers for Liveright beginning with Hendrick Van Loon's *The Story of Mankind* (1921). Equally important, he selected up-and-coming writers Eugene O'Neill (*Gold: A Play in Four Acts*), Ernest Hemingway (*In OurTime*), William Faulkner (*Soldier's Pay*), T.S. Eliot (*The Waste Land*), Sherwood Anderson (*Windy McPherson's Son*), and Hart Crane (*The Bridge*). He also edited Dreiser's *An American Tragedy*. As Manuel Komroff wrote in his tribute to Smith and to his lasting influence on American literature: "Here was born a new American renaissance. All literature was changed and the relation between literature and the great American public was also changed . much of this change was due to Tom Smith . No one literary man in America has to his credit so much and no one literary man has carried this load with such humble modesty ." (*The Book of Tom Smith. A Biblio-Epitaph*. Privately Printed, 1942). The relationship between Liveright and Smith inspired Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur to co-write and co-direct the 1935 film *The Scoundrel* (for which they won an Academy Award for their screenplay). One of the highspots of 20th Century poetry, rare signed, and with an excellent association. *Connolly 100*. Codice libro della libreria 99459

Printed using the tritone 300-line screen process on thick uncoated Mohawk Smooth Woven stock paper by the Meriden Printing Company Connecticut to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Hart Crane's masterpiece in the most loving manner possible. "The Bridge" has long been regarded as a modern classic. Less well-known is the fact that the First Edition originally appeared with a frontispiece photographic reproduction by Walker Evans. Malcolm Cowley considers "The Bridge" to be the greatest American poem since Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself". He gives a first-rate assessment of the poem as well as a first-hand account, which both appear only in this edition. "The Bridge" is indeed a "Song of Myself" as much as it is an homage to the Brooklyn Bridge. In the process of writing it, now-legendary characters were deeply involved: The handsome, wealthy, and immensely talented American expatriate Harry Crosby, publisher of the Black Sun Press, who shot his wife then committed suicide in 1928. Crosby struggled, among other things, with his apparent bisexuality. The two other major characters in "The Bridge" 's creation, among so many others, were both women: The wealthy and homely Peggy Guggenheim, who established the museum that bears her name in Venice, but is best-remembered as an insatiable sexual predator, who seduced and tried to sleep with every man in sight (recounted in Mary McCarthy's "The Cicerone") and Peggy Cowley, Malcolm's wife, with whom Crane had an affair in Mexico City. Cowley approved of the affair because it diverted Crane from his tormented homosexuality, discreetly referred to as his "wild living". Cowley leaves out The End, which remains much-discussed to this day: On April 27, 1932, on a steamship headed back to New York City, and after he was humiliated and beaten up for making sexual advances to a male crew member, Hart Crane committed suicide by jumping into the Gulf of Mexico. He left no suicide note, but several witnesses reported that he tearfully waved and said, "Goodbye, everybody!" before throwing himself overboard. His body was never recovered. Here then, is the poetic cycle itself: Alive, moving, and thrilling, almost eighty years later. A "must-have" edition for Hart Crane collectors. This copy is Number 1098, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and is very prominently and beautifully numbered (in pen) and signed (in pencil) by Richard Benson. This title was not widely distributed and is now very difficult to find. This is one of few copies still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 7 plates. One of the greatest American poets of the 20th century, re-interpreted by one of its most accomplished photographers. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 0871402254. Signed by Author. Codice libro della libreria 12274
