Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT HEMINGWAY PRESENTATION COPIES EVER OFFERED FOR SALE: Inscribed by Ernest Hemingway to Hadley Hemingway and his son Jack (Bumby), on the dedication page, as Hemingway expands the printed dedication ('To Philip, to Charles, and to Sully') . Hemingway's continuing inscription, entirely in his hand in black ink, reads: 'also to Hadley and Paul and to Bumby with much love from Pauline, Ernest, Patrick. and Gregory, and all of Africa. The lion enclosed under separate cover is the same lion Pauline almost shot on page 40.' To our knowledge, this is the only presentation copy from Ernest to Hadley ever to come on the market. First edition, first printing of this classic Hemingway. Original black cloth stamped in gilt, in original jacket (jacket has a large chip to 'T' in title on spine extending to rear cover, with some other nicks and tears and tape repairs to verso; book has some minor fading in spots and light edge wear). Hanneman A10A (Scribner's seal and 'A' on title page verso; jacket complete with $3.50 price). Color frontispiece by Juan Gris; 81 b/w 'action photographs' on plates. 1 color & 81 b/w Illustrations. Hadley Richardson Hemingway, later Hadley Mowrer (1891-1979), first wife of Ernest Hemingway. As Hemingway later said, Hadley was Ernest Hemingway's greatest and truest love, the woman he betrayed to his everlasting regret. The subject of the recent 'The Paris Wife', she is a figure of enduring public interest. She married a second time, to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Paul Mowrer in 1933, two years before this work was published. We have firm provenance for this book. The true first printing of the first edition in original jacket (green cloth binding has usual fading to spine and edges; minor wear; jacket has fading, nicks and wear from use). Hanneman A13A; with 'A' and Scribner's seal on title page verso. Decorations by Edward Shenton. [8],294,[1] pages.

Original Wraps. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. 12mo. Black lettered blue jacket over beige wraps, enclosed in green cloth slipcase. Hemingway's first book. Although Bill Bird's Three Mountains Press' In Our Time was contracted earlier, Robert McAlmon's Contact Editions book was published and released first. Limited to 300 copies only. This copy inscribed by Hemingway on the front endpaper "This book is the property of James Cowan--he is not responsible for it--nor did he buy it. It was presented to him by the author--Ernest Hemingway" Cowan was a fellow reporter for the Toronto Star newspaper, for which Hemingway also worked. Included also is a sheaf of correspondence between former owners and James Cowan attesting to it's history and authenticity. Also included a dealer's catalogue in which this book was listed for sale back in late thirties or forties. This copy wrapped in glassine which is contemporary but not original. Wear and a few tears to the extremities but a particularly fine example of a fragile book, otherwise a very good copy. A great Toronto copy of an essential item in the Hemingway canon. Inscribed by Author(s). Book.

First edition, first issue of this early Hemingway classic, which established him among the American masters. Octavo, original black cloth. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "To Eleanor Havre from her friend Ernest Hemingway Paris October 18 1929." Near fine in a very good first state dust jacket with the misspelling "Katharine Barclay" in the blurb on the front flap. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right. It is the basis for the 1932 film bearing the same name directed by Frank Borzage and starring Gary Cooper, Helen Hayes, and Adolphe Menjou.

Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First edition. First printing in early issue dust jacket with green bar on rear panel extending through nine lines of the blurb. A Very Good copy in like dust jacket. Book with spine toned and a faint dampstain to front board. Front inner hinge (now) professionally repaired. Price-clipped dust jacket with spine toned, a large crease running down the front panel, and some chipping and wear at the spine ends and extremities. Inscribed by the author: "For Daisy G. Roe | Wishing her all good luck from her friend Ernest Hemingway. Key West March 18, 1936." The recipient Daisey G. Roe was a Florida neighbor who had recently married up-and-coming politician (and future Jacksonville, Florida mayor) Caulie F. Whitehead. Authentic signed Hemingway material is becoming scarce on the market. Housed in a custom green quarter-leather slipcase with chemise. After publishing Winner Take Nothing in 1933, "Hemingway went to Africa to shoot the bounding kudu and to reply to his critics. The result is Green Hills of Africa. It is the most literary hunting trip on record" (New York Times). Here Hemingway "attempted to write an absolutely true book to see whether the shape of a country and the pattern of a month's action can, if truly presented, compete with a work of the imagination." It stands as one of his most memorable books set in the continent and, along with The Snows of Kilimanjaro, helped to establish his reputation as a safari-hunter and outdoorsman. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket.

Later printing of Hemingway's first major novel published as Fiesta in the United Kingdom. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Jack Lonsdale with best wishes Ernest Hemingway Ritz 10/9/56." On this date, Hemingway was in Madrid for a bull fight with his wife Mary. Very good in a very good price-clipped dust jacket, owner name. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. The Sun Also Rises was published by Scribner's in 1926, and a year later in the United Kingdom by Jonathan Cape under the title Fiesta. Though it initially received mixed reviews, it is now "recognized as Hemingway's greatest work" (Meyers, 1985). The fictional plot depicts a love story between war-wounded and impotent Jake Barnes and the promiscuous divorcà e Lady Brett Ashley, but the novel is a roman à clef; the characters are based on real people and the action is based on real events. Hemingway proposes that the "Lost Generation," considered to have been decadent, dissolute and irretrievably damaged by World War I, was resilient and strong. Naturally, themes of love, death, renewal in nature, and the nature of masculinity are heavily investigated. For example, the characters engage in bull-fighting, which is presented as an idealized drama: The matador faces death and, in so doing, creates a moment of existential nothingness, broken when he vanquishes the possibility of death by killing the bull (Stoltzfus, 2005). The Sun Also Rises is seen as an iconic modernist novel for future generations (Mellow, 1992), although it has been emphasized that Hemingway was not philosophically a modernist (Reynolds, 1990). "The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's masterpiece--one of them, anyway--and no matter how many times you've read it or how you feel about the manners and morals of the characters, you won't be able to resist its spell. This is a classic that really does live up to its reputation" (David Laskin).

Early printing of Hemingwayâ s masterwork on bullfighting. Octavo, original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, frontispiece by Juan Gris, illustrated. Association copy, inscribed by Hemingway on the front free endpaper, "For Nita with regards and affection (Ernest Hemingway) Mr. Papa. Finca VigÃa - SF. de Paula 22/7/49." The recipient, Juanita "Nita" Jensen was Hemingway's secretary at his home in the San Francisco de Paula Ward of Havana, Finca Vigia, from 1949 to 1952. While working as a secretary at the American embassy in Havana, Nita received government clearance to moonlight as a part-time secretary for Hemingway, typing the majority of his letters between 1949 and 1952. In 1952, she married diplomatic officer Walter Houk at Finca VigÃa. In addition to hosting the wedding, Hemingway gave away the bride and cosigned the necessary legal paperwork and the couple became frequent visitors of the finca, often accompanying Hemingway on fishing trips aboard the Pilar and visits to his favorite local bar, the Floridita. Very good in a very good dust jacket with chipping to the crown and foot of the spine. An exceptional association. Published in 1932, Death in the Afternoon is Hemingway's masterwork on the magnificence of the art of bull-fighting. John Dos Passos praised the book as "an absolute model for how that sort of thing ought to be done," and a contemporary review in The New York Herald Tribune described it as "full of the vigor and forthrightness of the author's personality, his humor, his strong opinionsâ "and languageâ ¦ In short, it is the essence of Hemingway" (Mellow, 415).

First edition, early printing of the novel that is regarded as one of Hemingwayâ s best works. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Ernest Hemingway. Near fine in an excellent near fine first issue dust jacket without the photographer's name to the rear panel. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Rare and desirable signed by Hemingway. For Whom the Bell Tolls combines two of Hemingway's recurring obsessions: war and personal honor. "This is the best book Ernest Hemingway has written, the fullest, the deepest, the truest. It will, I think, be one of the major novels of American literature Hemingway has struck universal chords, and he has struck them vibrantly" (J. Donald Adams). It was the basis for the 1943 film directed by Sam Wood, starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress; however, only the Greek actress Katina Paxinou won an Oscar for her portrayal of Pilar.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First edition. Foxing on the foredge and first and last few pages, and a little scattered foxing throughout the text, thus very good in price-clipped near fine dust jacket. Vignettes inspired by the author's profound nostalgia for the halcyon days of his early career while living in Europe, and particularly Paris with his first wife Hadley Richardson. This copy is Signed on the title page by Hadley using her name from her second, and final, marriage to noted journalist Paul Mowrer: "Hadley R. Mowrer." After their divorce, when Hemingway left Hadley for Pauline Pfeiffer, Hadley assiduously avoided connections to her past with Hemingway. This is a profoundly nostalgic object indicative of Hemingway's heyday. We originally purchased this copy in the 1980s from the person who convinced Hadley to sign the book, sold it into a distinguished private collection, and have just recently reacquired it. We've never seen another copy of this book signed by Hadley either before or since, and think it is likely unique. Further detailed provenance on request.

Book Club Edition. Book club edition. Signed by Hemingway on title page. Measuring approximately 8.5" x 6" with 471 numbered pages. This book is in good plus condition. Moderate bumping to both ends of spine. Moderate scuffing to all edges of boards. Discoloration at the bottom end of spine. Previous owners book plate on front pastedown. Authors signature on title page. Dust jacket is in fair condition. Heavy chipping to both ends of spine and around edges of jacket. Moderate sunning to entire jacket. Book club edition stated on bottom of front flap. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is one of Hemingway's biggest literary triumphs. Written in 1939 and finished in 1940, the first edition was published in October of that year, with a print run of 75,000 copies. The novel was inspired by Hemingway's experiences as a journalist in Spain during its civil war. The plot centers on an American dynamiter who joins forces with an anti-fascist troupe to carry out the detonation of a bridge. What unfolds is a story of bravery, deception, love, and agony. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is certainly one of Ernest Hemingway's greatest novels. Were it not for the war and politics of the time, this novel would have been the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1941 - as the jurors voted unanimously in favor of the award.
