Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The first book to appear in the illustrious Oxford History of the United States, this critically acclaimed volume--a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize--offers an unsurpassed history of the Revolutionary War and the birth of the American republic. Beginning with the French and Indian War and continuing to the election of George Washington as first president, Robert Middlekauff offers a panoramic history of the conflict between England and America, highlighting the drama and anguish of the colonial struggle for independence. Combining the political and the personal, he provides a compelling account of the key events that precipitated the war, from the Stamp Act to the Tea Act, tracing the gradual gathering of American resistance that culminated in the Boston Tea Party and "the shot heard 'round the world." The heart of the book features a vivid description of the eight-year-long war, with gripping accounts of battles and campaigns, ranging from Bunker Hill and Washington's crossing of the Delaware to the brilliant victory at Hannah's Cowpens and the final triumph at Yorktown, paying particular attention to what made men fight in these bloody encounters. The book concludes with an insightful look at the making of the Constitution in the Philadelphia Convention of 1787 and the struggle over ratification. Through it all, Middlekauff gives the reader a vivid sense of how the colonists saw these events and the importance they gave to them. Common soldiers and great generals, Sons of Liberty and African slaves, town committee-men and representatives in congress--all receive their due. And there are particularly insightful portraits of such figures as Sam and John Adams, James Otis, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and many others. This new edition has been revised and expanded, with fresh coverage of topics such as mob reactions to British measures before the War, military medicine, women's role in the Revolution, American Indians, the different kinds of war fought by the Americans and the British, and the ratification of the Constitution. The book also has a new epilogue and an updated bibliography. The cause for which the colonists fought, liberty and independence, was glorious indeed. Here is an equally glorious narrative of an event that changed the world, capturing the profound and passionate struggle to found a free nation. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

AMELAR, M.D. From the Department of Urology, New York University School of Medicine, New York, New York Robert Sherman Hotchkiss was born in Jamestown, New York, on July 7, 1903. He received his B.S. degree in 1925 and his M.D. degree in 1928 from the University of Michigan. Following his graduation, he was appointed as Intern at the Royal Victoria Hospital, in Montreal. The following year he joined the house staff at Bellevue Hospital, and after completing eighteen months on the medical and surgical services he received an appointment as Resident in Urology. At age twenty nine, Robert S. Hotchkiss completed a Chief Residency in Urology at the Cor- nell Division of Bellevue Hospital in 1932, and was appointed to the Attending Staff at New York Hospital as an Assistant Urologist in the Outpatient Department. Howard Jeck, who subsequently became the Director of the Department of Urology at Bellevue Hospital, was the Chief of the Urology Outpatient Department at New York Hospital in 1932. Margaret Sanger was interested in funding a project concerned with the investigation of childless couples, and she persuaded Jeck to establish a "male sterility clinic" in the outpatient department at New York Hospital. Hotchkiss, newly appointed to his staff, was assigned by Jeck to direct this Male Sterility Clinic funded by Margaret Sanger. Henricus Stander, Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at Cornell, gave support to the venture. Paul Reznikoff provided laboratory space in the Department of Medicine, and Ephraim Schorr was an advisor who supervised endocrinologic diagnosis and treatment. Beginning the Study of Male Infertility This was occurring at a time when the importance of the role of the male in infertility was first being acknowledged. In 1929 Maeomber and Sanders had just published their article on sperm cell count. They concluded that pregnancies could occur with sperm counts of less than 60 million per: mL, but higher counts were believed to increase the chances of pregnancy. At the same time, at Cornell' William H. Carey 2 had been studying sperm cell maigration in post coital tests." Richard D.Amelar, Robert S. Hotchkiss, M.D.â Â"Remembered.
