Composer Richard Wagner is seen in a new and unexpected light through this collection of his letters written from Paris in the 1840s. At age 26, Wagner gave up his as yet-undistinguished muiscal career in Germany and travelled to the French capital to make his fortune with his grand opera "Rienszi". He met with no success and was forced to earn a living through journalism and musical hackwork---but he did compose his masterpiece "The Flying Dutchman". The letters presented here show his disallousionment with the world of music at that time and place but the themes expressed as he looked longing back to his native Germany presaged the ideals which were to dominate his later life. A fine, fresh copy in bright, crisp dust jacket with a tiny snag lower edge.
