Softcover. Condizione: Good. Illustrated. Stargate SG-1 premiered in 1997 and over the course of eight seasons, the show has developed its own unique mythological superstructure. It has blossomed into a series driven by fierce fan loyalty, with lively Internet discussion groups, the proliferation of *textual poaching* in fan fiction and art, and popular annual conventions. This book is a lively critical celebration of both Stargate and its spinoff, Atlantis. Its characters, themes, representations of sexuality and *otherness* are discussed, along with its interaction with fan fiction, its locations in Canada, its ideological framing of an American point-of-view, and tensions between its humanistic morality and military/political objectives in the shows' plots. There is also assessment of the currently fledgling Stargate: Atlantis. Written for both fans and scholars, the book also includes an episode guide to the first eight seasons of Stargate SG-1.

Softcover. Condizione: Good. Discovering the Moscow Countryside is a fascinating voyage into the history, architecture, people, and archaeology of the country that surrounds Moscow. The towns and villages dotted around this wooded landscape are rich in associations. Wave after wave of invaders--Tatars, Poles, French, and Germans--sought to conquer Russia through these lands. Now, with the collapse of the Soviet Union, many of the beautiful monasteries and little ruined country churches are coming back to life. This is also the land of the dacha--that special haven to which all city dwellers, at the first melting of the snow, escape: whether it be to a wooden mansion or a tiny room lost in the woods. This book is a practical guide for the tourist keen to explore this fascinating area of Russia, as well as for the curious armchair traveler.

Softcover. Condizione: Good. Revised. This revised edition is a comprehensive account of the technological and political possibilities and dangers presented by weapons of mass destruction in the wake of September 11th, 2001. The technical and organizational sophistication of the attacks on September 11th heralds a new era in the age-old war against terrorism. After these attacks, attention became focused on the activities and capacities of Islamic extremist groups, such as Osama bin Ladens al-Qaeda organization, but the reality is that terrorist threats could come from almost any quarter.

Softcover. Condizione: Good. NULL. Television, John Ellis argues, responds to two powerful desires of our age: it makes us witnesses to often traumatic events and it tries--and fails--to provide us with narratives that make sense of the world. In Seeing Things, Ellis makes sense of modern television, both by exploring its processes and in terms of its dynamic relationships with the cultures that provide it with raw material. Television, he proposes, gives us many different ways to understand the world but does not arbitrate between them. He explores this process as one of "working through," whereby television news takes in the chaos and conflict of the world and subsequent programs offer diverse ways of unraveling its confusions, from the psycho-babble of talk shows to the open narratives of soaps, documentaries and dramas. By means of this working through, problems are exhausted rather than resolved.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. The politics of oil revolves around its price and the reliability of its suppliers. In turn, many international conflicts in the world today are rooted in these politics. Not surprisingly: the price of oil is managed by a cartel-OPEC-some of whose member governments are deeply hostile to the United States and other major importers of oil. And OPECcontrols nearly two-thirds of the world's oil reserves.Ironically, the United States and many others, especially non-OPEC producers of energy, have come to rely on OPEC to set prices that encourage the development of high-cost oil elsewhere, and thus promote some diversity of supply.Fundamental to any understanding of the politics of the contemporary world is an understanding of the politics and most recent history of petroleum. Francisco Parra, drawing on his long and varied experience in international oil, sets out the events that have shaped the industry over the past fifty years--the displacement of coal as the world's prime fuel; the tight control of international oil by the seven major oil companies (all US or British), monopolizingproduction in the Middle East and Venezuela; the rise of OPEC and the ousting of the companies in a bitter struggle in which the companies were abandoned by their home governments; how the world was hypnotized for more than a decade by the delusion of impending depletion; and the political turbulence that has led to wars in the Middle East, to US sanctions on Iran, Iraq, and Libya, and, most recently, to the invasion of Iraq. After a surge in non-OPEC oil production in the 1980s and 1990s, dependence on the Middle East is increasing and OPEC's control over price is volatile. Parra asks whether this enduring predicament-that holds the threat of political conditions being attached to the supply of oil-can be managed by the "West", to avert successive and deepening crises in the pricing and supply of oil and in the world at large.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1. Hamas is best-known to outsiders as a military organisation. Its political wing has received less attention, and it is often assumed that the schools, hospitals and universities it runs are merely instruments for the dissemination of a jihadist ideology. Following its surprise victory in the 2006 Palestinian elections, it is more important than ever to understand its politics. How serious is its commitment to democracy? Did people vote for Hamas in spite of or because of its Islamic agenda? Drawing on extensive fieldwork in Gaza, Michael Irving Jensen addresses these questions, and offers the first multidimensional portrait of this complex organisation. Based on interviews with the leadership, the rank-and-file, and ordinary Palestinians, Jensen shows how Hamas's officially stated goals relate to the social and political realities of the West Bank and Gaza. In doing so he lays the groundwork for a more accurate way of understanding the organisation, and the direction in which its war with Israel is travelling.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. First Edition. From BooklistThis feast for nautomaniacs chronicles HMS Doris, a British frigate built in Bombay in 1807 and scrapped in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1829. Doris traveled far and wide on many lawful occasions, but Vale focuses on a four-year commission, from 1821 to 1825, on the South American station. All the health lessons of the Napoleonic Wars had been reasonably well learned, and diseases claimed few of the crew; but accidents, desertion, and disgruntlement with the naval service did their work. Doris survived captains who used the lash freely and others who used it sparingly, minor scandals and major blunders in handling money and promotions (two commodities that usually went to men who combined "interest" and serious practical experience), difficulties obtaining supplies, and all the headaches of what would now be called "peacekeeping" in a Latin America in revolt against Spain and actively assisted by many British officers and seamen. A serious, seriously irresistible addition to the literature of the classic era of sailing warfare. Roland GreenCopyright American Library Association. All rights reservedProduct DescriptionWhat was life really like on a wooden warship? Brian Vale takes a look at life on board the 42-gun frigate HMS Doris, from Bombay in 1807 to Valparaiso in 1829. This intriguing account of life on board concentrates on the ship's service under Sir Thomas Hardy as she protected British interests during the stormy years of South American Independence. Vale vividly examines recruitment, desertions, food, drink, disease, sex, flogging, and death. He enthusiastically details the operations in Brazil, Chile, and Peru from a military and a political angle, as well as from the perspective of sailors.Review".an interesting picture of one ship in the post-war navy."--Paul Webb, Albion".An excellent book, which combines naval authority with literary elegance."--Lawrence Phillips, The Ships Telegraph" . . Softcover. Condizione: Good. Reprint. Marrakech is the heart and lifeblood of Morocco's ancient storytelling tradition. For nearly a thousand years, storytellers have gathered in the Jemaa el Fna, the legendary square of the city, to recount ancient folktales and fables to rapt audiences. But this unique chain of oral tradition that has passed seamlessly from generation to generation is teetering on the brink of extinction. The competing distractions of television, movies and the internet have drawn the crowds away from the storytellers and few have the desire to learn the stories and continue their legacy. Richard Hamilton has witnessed at first hand the death throes of this rich and captivating tradition and, in the labyrinth of the Marrakech medina, has tracked down the last few remaining storytellers, recording stories that are replete with the mysteries and beauty of the Maghreb.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. First Edition. Was he a far-sighted war hero, or an ambitious networker promoted well above his natural talent? Admired as a modernising chief of staff, a timely decoloniser, and a genuine player on the world stage, Mountbatten nevertheless continues to attract fierce criticism. In this timely new biography, Adrian Smith offers a fresh and convincing perspective, depicting Mountbatten as a quintessentially modern, highly professional figure within the Royal Navy, and at Combined Operations and SE Asia Command, a hands-on officer who enthusiastically embraced new technology; someone who, although an aristocrat, was by instinct a progressive, innovative in his approach to man management. Smith brings Mountbatten to life, acknowledging the essential qualities as well as the obvious weaknesses. Beneath the rich, vain, often ruthless, embodiment of power and privilege could be found a very human, even vulnerable, character - the complex personality of a pivotal figure in the history of twentieth-century Britain and her empire.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Al-Mu'ayyad fi'l-DIn al-ShIrzI (died 470/1087), was an outstanding, multi-talented Fatimid scholar of Persian origin. He excelled as a missionary-agent, statesman, poet, preacher and theologian. Based on his autobiography, this work provides an insight into the remarkable life and achievements of al-Mu'ayyad through the important stages of his career, describing his daring attempt to win over the Buyids of western Iraq to the Fatimid cause, his dangerous flight to Cairo and finally his expedition to Syria and Iraq to build up an alliance of local rulers against the invading Saljuk Turks. The author demonstrates that in addition to being an intriguing personal account, the life of al-Mu'ayyad is a rich source of Islamic history in the 5/llth century, which deals with crucial events in the struggle between the Fatimids, Abbasids, Buyids and Saljuks for supremacy in the Muslim world.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. ""The most wonderful natural feature I have ever seen"" With these words the explorer William Gosse expressed the awe he and many others have felt at the natural phenomenon of Uluru. The first white person to reach the central Australian monolith, he gave it the name ""Ayers Rock."" But who was Henry Ayers, the man whose name is forever associated with Australia's most recognizable natural icon? And why should he still be remembered today?Although the rock now carries its ancient indigenous name, Uluru, the name of Ayers is still linked with the the Rocks ""discovery"" in 1873. Indeed, ""Ayers Rock"" is one of the most famous natural wonders on earth and, despite its remote location, attracts over 400,000 visitors each year. This book, the first biography of Henry Ayers, focuses attention on the complex character behind the name and examines all aspects of his life -- from his humble origins in the naval city of Portsmouth in southern England, his migration to Australia and his career as a miner, businessman and eventually as Premier of South Australia -- a post to which he was elected seven times. It provides a fascinating insight into Australian history through the life of a man who was consistently in the upper echelons of influence and authority in colonial society and whose legacy lives through his association with the most famous and recognisable natural feature of his adopted country.

Satyajit Ray's three films about the boyhood, adolescence and manhood of Apu, Pather Panchali (1955), Aparajito (1956) and The World of Apu (1959) - collectively known as The Apu Trilogy - are established classics of world cinema. The Trilogy was the chief reason for Satyajit Ray's receiving a Hollywood Oscar for lifetime achievement in 1992, just before his death. This book by Ray's biographer and world authority Andrew Robinson is the first full study of the Trilogy. Robinson -- who came to know the director well during the last decade of his career -- covers the literary and cultural background to the films, their production, their music composed by Ravi Shankar, their aesthetic value, and their complex critical reception in the East and the West, from 1955 up to the present day. Extensively and beautifully illustrated and a pleasure to read, The Apu Trilogy will appeal to anyone captivated by the unique world created by Satyajit Ray.

Softcover. Condizione: Good. Jean Baudrillard has been a unique intellectual voice in many of the key debates and issues facing an increasingly globalized, media-driven world. Baudrillard Reframed offers the arts student, and others working with Baudrillard's ideas, an accessible overview of his better known arguments, as well as extending beyond them to critically engage with his radical notions of illusion, singularity, and the fatal.Kim Toffoletti surveys the ideas of this influential -- often provocative -- French thinker as they relate to today's image-saturated environment. She demonstrates their relevance to analyzing contemporary visual phenomena such as advertising, photography, reality TV, fashion, art, pornography, and virtual reality. Baudrillards key themes and arguments are illustrated through a range of visual works, from the graffiti art of Banksy and Katherine Hamnettís protest t-shirts, to Sophie Calleís photography.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Storm on Horseback is both a dramatic history and, uniquely, a travellers guide to the extraordinary heritage of the Seljuks in Turkey.Who are the Turks and where did they come from? The successive empires that they created in a whirlwind of conquests from China to North Africa led one chronicler to call the waves of mounted Turkic warriors a ""storm on horseback."" This is the story of the Seljuk Turks of Anatolia who created the first Turkish state. The Seljuk period--when Anatolia, which had been for the most part Greek and Christian and became predominantly Turkic and Muslim--was one of the great cultural transformations in Middle Eastern history. Here, John Freely takes the reader from Istanbul throughout eastern Anatolia, describing the surpassingly beautiful monuments with which the Seljuks adorned their cities, as well as the music, dance, prose and poetry of the period. Though the Seljuks themselves did not survive as rulers, their cultural heritage lives on in the deepest roots of Turkish life, just as their magnificent monuments still adorn the landscape of Turkey.

Softcover. Condizione: used. Ibn Battuta was famous in his own lifetime during the 14th Century as the greatest traveller of the age. He traversed the whole Islamic world (from his native Tangier to China), and crossed over its boundaries in Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. He was variously attacked by pirates, shipwrecked, marooned and kidnapped. His observations on political power, and on legal, commercial and cultural practices in the numerous places that he visited. give his Travels an enduring fascination. This narrative of high adventure rivals, or even surpasses, the explorations of Battuta's near contemporary, Marco Polo. Told with hum our, irony and pathos, his travelogue is filled with marvels which blend idealism with reality. L. P. Harvey reviews Ibn Battuta's journeys and discusses the major themes of the Travels. He examines the financing of Ibn Battuta's adventures; how geography and natural history are presented by him; how the Travels engage with issues of race and gender; and the religious milieu through which Ibn Battuta moved. Harvey's account of the traveller reveals the vivid portrait of a man with his fair share of human failings, but who was nonetheless remarkable for his courage, unbounded curiosity, and for the candor and skill with which he reported on the world as he had found it.
