Finely bound c.1900 in tan full morocco, spine in compartments with gilt titles direct, spine and sides elaborately gilt with Art Nouveau floral design, gilt-tooled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Front joint just starting from bottom, very small nicks to corners, spine very slightly darkened, leaves evenly browned but otherwise all in excellent condition. True first edition, very scarce, in excellent condition almost entirely untrimmed (but for gilt top edge) and in a fine Art Nouveau binding. This copy is in the second state, without the rare flyleaf quoting Pindar which (as in all but c.12 known copies). The Errata slip is present in this copy, with the notice that, "the author deems it right to state, that the following Errata are not attributable to the printer", in a catty allusion to printer Buchanan McMillan's numerous unsolicited corrections. It was Shelley's complaint as to this liberty taken by the printer that led C. and J. Ollier, Shelley's publishers, to read, for the first time, quite what they had agreed to publish, noting not only the incendiary political and philosophical content, but more urgently the fact that an incestuous relationship between brother and sister was central to the story. London was alive with gossip about Shelley living with both Mary Godwin and her half-sister Claire Clairmont, and in contemporary usage, such a ménage was termed incest (St. Clair, The Godwins and the Shelleys, p. 432.) At the publishers' request, Shelley then made alterations to those copies which had not already been issued, removing any hint of incest, and gave it the new title The Revolt of Islam, issuing the original sheets with 26 cancelled leaves and a new title leaf (some of which were misdated 1817). This however is the rare true first edition, entirely unexpurgated, and lacking only the almost inaccessibly rare flyleaf with a quotation from Pindar (there are an estimate 12 copies in the first state). Interestingly, Shelley has, in the final paragraph of his characteristically defiant preface to the present text, given an explanation (cancelled in the expurgated edition) for the incestuous plot that points less towards his domestic ménage and more towards his demotic mission: "In the personal conduct of my Hero and Heroine, there is one circumstance which was intended to startle the reader from the trance of ordinary life. It was my object to break through the crust of those outworn opinions on which established institutions depend. I have appealed therefore to the most universal of all feelings, and have endeavoured to strengthen the moral sense, by forbidding it to waste its energies in seeking to avoid actions which are only crimes of convention. It is because there is so great a multitude of artificial vices, that there are so few real virtues." This is a splendidly bound copy of the true first edition of Shelley's longest poem, through which he truly began to work out his own vision for the world (Queen Mab, for all its characteristic enthusiasm, had essentially been a versification of Godwin's Political Justice, and Alastor more of a personal introspection), and in which the poet, as he writes in the dedication lines to Mary, "from that secret store, / wrought linkéd armour for my soul before / it might walk forth to war among mankind.". Broadside (22 x 16 inches), illustrated with a fine engraved plate (14 6/8 x 16 inches), above the headline "The Arrival of the Anti-Christ", and three columns of letterpress (edges close cropped affecting the last line of letterpress, a bit spotted, early repair on verso). A broadside satirising the birth of the Prince of Wales (James Edward Stuart, the future Old Pretender), the fall of James II and the beginning of the War of the Grand Alliance, with an etching by de Hooghe. In the centre three figures wearing armour and paper crowns, James II (1), Louis XIV (2) and the Grand Dauphin (a), enact the Three Kings in a traditional Dutch Epiphany procession holding aloft the "Star of the Kings" (b), here composed of a windmill, and an orb encircled by the mitres of the seven bishops who opposed James's declaration of indulgence. James wears a Jesuit's biretta under his paper crown, a holy water stoop, a rosary, a sword at his side and shackles on his ankles; he pulls on a rope attached to the Star to keep it in motion. On the right in a centre of group of figures, the Pope (3) holds a cardinal's hat (d) for Father Petre and swaddling clothes (e) for the young prince. On the left, Cardinal von Fürstenberg (4), shown as if on pilgrimage to Cologne, holding a cross with a banner reading "L'Elector Imaginaire", presumably a reference to the newly appointed Archbishop-Elector Joseph Clemens von Wittelsbach. Behind him is Father Petre (5) riding on a blind donkey and carrying a crucifix. In the left foreground, Mary of Modena kneels rocking a cradle (6) in which lies the Prince of Wales (c) playing with a toy windmill; the foot of the cradle is elaborately carved with a wheel of fortune to which cling naked children. On the right, the pope is restrained by William III (7), who carries a lance with the cap of liberty, and Leopold I (8); behind them is a group of soldiers with guns, lances, a trumpet and a flag labelled, "Inutrumque Turcam" and beyond a German inn with the sign of the roasted cock. In the distant background, to left, are ruined catholic churches and chapels (f), a row of gibbets and the sun setting on the papacy (9). Provenance: From the Krown & Spellman Collection, their sale, Heritage, 4th November, 2015 lot 45243 The first political iconographer of the Netherlands and its first great caricaturist.Romeyn de Hooghe was the most significant and prolific Netherlandish engraver in the second half of the seventeenth century (The Getty Institute) Romeyn de Hooghe was born in Amsterdam in 1645 "and worked there until c.1680-1682, when he moved to Haarlem, where he died in 1708. For several Netherlandish provinces, he created interior architectural paintings and other works. In 1662 De Hooghe was invited by Adam Frans van der Meulen (1632-1690) to Paris, where he etched the baptism of the Dauphin in 1668. There he met King Jan III Sobieski of Poland and was knighted by him in 1675. "De Hooghe painted, engraved, sculpted, designed medals, enameled, taught drawing school, and bought and sold art as a dealer. During the 1690s he made sculptures for the palace of Het Loo (1689-1692), designed and etched triumphal arches and medals for William III's entry into the Hague (1691), and designed the Haarlem market festival decorations for the peace celebration after the capture of Naumur (1695). His political, legal, and economic interests are evident in his writings: Schouburgh der Nederlandsche Veranderingen (1674), Æsopus in Europa (1701), Spiegel van Staat des Vereenigde Nederlanden (1706), and Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude Volkeren (1735), all of which he also illustrated. Alla brossura anteriore, titolo dorato stilizzato al centro dello specchio, contornato da una bordura ornamentale dorata inquadrante fitti motivi liliali. Vignetta circolare alla brossura di tergo inquadrante dei gigli ed un cartiglio. Conservata la camicia editoriale in percallina bordeaux con l'impresa dello stampatore a secco ed il titolo dell'opera in oro. La prima carta bianca del volume reca, impressi delicatamente a secco da invenzione di Alexandre Charpentier, l'effigie di un giglio (tale fiore è scelto come emblema della purezza dell'amore quasi mistico che lega il trovatore con Ilsée, Principessa di Tripoli) ed il titolo dell'opera. 132 bordure cromolitografiche a motivi variati per ogni pagina, di cui 4 a foglio intero senza testo, il tutto realizzato da Mucha; alcune delle bordure sono rialzate in argento. Bel frontespizio con l'effigie della Principessa Ilsée al centro, riquadrata da una cornice Liberty a motivi ornamentali e floreali impressi a più colori. Numerosi fregi e motivi decorativi egualmente realizzati dal grande artista cèco e impressi cromolitograficamente. Restauri abili al dorso. Bell'esemplare. Prima edizione in lingua cèca, estremamente rara, tirata a sole 200 copie numerate (esemplare n° 134). Autentico gioiello dell'illustrazione Art Nouveau e tra i lavori più significativi di Mucha, il volume constitue un chef-d'ouvre du livre illustré alors en plein renouveau (Bénézit). Mucha venne contattato nel 1897 dall'editore parigino Henri Piazza, dopo il successo ottenuto dalla Princesse Lointaine del Rostand, affinché disegnasse delle tavole per tale opera (Mucha aveva già realizzato gli scenari ed i costumi per la prima rappresentazione teatrale del 1895, in cui il ruolo femminile era sostenuto dalla massime attrice del tempo, Sarah Bernhardt). Il rifiuto opposto però da Rostand fece sì che il Piazza propendesse per fare illustrare invece l'Ilsée di Robert de Flers, breve romanzo imperniato sull'amore platonico tra un trovatore ed una principessa di una terra esotica. L'edizione originale francese con le visualizzazioni di Mucha risale appunto al 1897. Il giovane e affascinante e buono e tenero Robert de Flers, come lo chiamava il suo amico Proust, nacque a Pont-l’Évêque (Calvados) nel 1872. OFFERING: The sole example of a personal artists' book made as an affirmation of beauty in 1945 by an accomplished British woman artist, identified by two ciphers, PKB and PB, probably, in the county of Dorset, South West England. Made in protest against war industrialization and its rampant pollution of the countryside, the artist has matched seven linoleum block prints, six watercolors, and twelve pen & ink illustrations and decorations with pastoral poetry. Many works are exquisite. And the balance of line and space in the linocuts demonstrate a mastery of the medium. Calligraphy is in the Trajan style with simple line-ending flourishes: inks, for the title page, poem titles, and some first initials, match the principal color of the coupled illustration or decoration. Poetry is by the artist, with the exception of "I Love All Beauteous Things", the Robert Bridges poem that begins the work and proclaims her aesthetic. The light green flock endpapers are decorated with original pen & ink botanical designs, different for each side. The book jacket is decorated with an original span & branch design done with five colors of ink. Preserved loose are a handwritten outline, four linocuts, (two intended for insertion), and preparatory calligraphy and decoration studies. PAGINATION: 24 unnumbered leaves, 14 with illustration and decoration, 10 blank. FORMAT: Sewn half black cloth and blue paper boards and hand decorated book jacket. SIZE: 290 x 200 mm. CONDITION: Bound Artworks: Fine. / Pages: bright and clean, pp. 2-5 with ruffling along gutter. / Boards: upper side bowed. / Jacket: colors somewhat faded on upper side; 2 corners with tears and top and bottom edges with small tears, top edge with gentle crease; spine toned, substantial losses at head and foot. / Binding: solid and reliable, but some signatures with separation, one signature with binding creases; needs to be handled with care. / Loose Linocuts: "Fungus": Plate fine, margins with wear. The poem ends with a superb watercolor tailpiece, a wide view of a crowd watching a grimed horizon of smokestacks at sunset, in the purple, grape, and taupe colors associated with industrial pollution, with verse; "But I who all my life have / spent in clean / Dew-sweetened air and healthy / country days, / can find no peace, no joy, and / few who mean / To love and serve mankind. Cet artiste dessinateur, peintre et affichiste italien collabore à diverses revues parisiennes (Paris-Noël, Le Figaro illustré, L'Assiette au beurre, avec des illustrations à caractère léger, voire érotique. Il crée aussi des bijoux pour La Maison Moderne (Osterwalder, 1, 783). Henri LAVEDAN exploite dans ses romans et pièces une satire de la noblesse, associée à celle de la présumée haute finance juive. Il arrive de trouver deux dates différentes pour certaines œuvres de Lavedan. Il s'agit parfois d'œuvres parues tout d'abord sous forme de « roman dialogué », genre cher à Lavedan, donnant la date de la première publication, puis jouées quelques années plus tard en tant que comédies sur la scène d'un théâtre, donnant la date de la première représentation. Ce cas se produit par exemple pour Le Nouveau Jeu : Le Nouveau jeu, roman dialogué, 1892, puis comédie en cinq actes, représentée la 1re fois le 8 février 1898 au théâtre des Variétés, Fayard & Flammarion, Kolb. Il volume è considerato il primo libro d'artista italiano per l'infanzia. Questo sembra essere il debito maggiore che egli ha contratto con l'art nouveau: la possibilità di celare, sotto la quieta e coloratissima bonomia dei suoi pupazzi, un fondo di sottile cattiveria, un insinuante riflesso di quel sedimento favolistico, fatto di streghe buttate nel forno, di vecchi e deformi, derisi e umiliati, che sempre accompagna letterariamente l'infanzia. Sotto la coltre raffinata di un Eros trionfante, anche Beardsley velava il sospetto di un Thanatos incombente, al quale poi, cosi' precocemente, si arrese. Rubino invece nasconde, nei meandri di un variopinto giardino, le tracce di un mondo opposto; quasi il divertimento iconografico di un vitalismo infantile, freddamente deciso ad autoproclamarsi padrone del mondo, scacciandone le forme vecchie, le immagini della decadenza (Faeti, Guardare le figure, pag. 217). Rare original edition, printed in a limited number of copies. "Ecrivain d'un talent universel", Ménard was a poet, inventor, philosopher and historian of religions, political pamphleteer and painter. He was a student with Baudelaire at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, and active supporter of the 1848 revolution: his Prologue d'une Révolution is very rare and an important work dealing with this revolution and its causes. It was published in Proudhon's Le Peuple in 1848-1849 and earned him 15 months in prison. On his release he went into exile in London and Brussels where he found his friends Louis Blanc and Blanqui again and where he befriended Marx and Engels. After the amnesty of 1859 he returned to Paris and from then on devoted himself primarily to the arts.He found in polytheism a social and moral guide, a union of order and liberty in which reason, imagination, art, religion, and politics could flourish. His best known work is the present work: a mixture of mystical poetry, philosophical dialogues and a number of much admired tales. The work exercised a profound influence: Barrès, R. de Montesquiou, Anatole France, Leconte de Lisle, etc. The work is very rare and not mentioned by Vicaire who lists a later (1886) edition. - A beautiful copy bound by the French master binder Georges Levitzky. Levitzky was born in 1885 in the Ukraine, moved to Paris and worked for some time for Prouté before establishing his own shop in 1910 becoming an important binder: King Albert I of Belgium and Alexander I of Serbia were among his clientele, a few examples of his work can be found in Duncan & de Bartha, Art Nouveau And Art Deco Bookbinding. Descrizione libro: From the firm's foundation in to 1947, 1889. Goodyer has long been recognised as a significant figure in the arts and crafts movement (see Adburgham's 'Shops and Shopping' and Aslin's 'Aesthetic Movement, Prelude to Art Nouveau'), but surprisingly little is known about him. A former partner in the firm of Liberty's, he founded his Aesthetic Gallery at 55 Bond Street in 1889. It specialized in 'English silks, cashmeres, velveteens, fans, cushions, handkerchiefs, table covers, and other dainty manufactures', and numbered Voysey among its suppliers. The present collection, assembled for the firm, contains a mass of unique material, presenting an opportunity for a serious study of the firm. The newspaper articles, collected by the press cuttings agencies of Romeike & Curtice and Durrant, draw from a wide variety of sources. Also present are three photographs of the shop, articles of the firm's stationery (including Goodyer's calling card), advertisements and other matter. Although on aged paper and with some items slightly worn, the collection as a whole is in good condition. The early cuttings (1887 to 1890) are laid down on thirty-three 4to pages of album (with thumb index and 'Newspaper Cuttings' stamped on the front). The earliest cutting, from the World of 27 February 1887, sets the tone, describing 'Mr. Goodyer's aesthetic show', its author writing 'Mr. Goodyer's show of artistic fabrics and Eastern curios is quite wonderful: of course one has seen it all before; for who shall say that it is possible to out-Liberty Liberty? This, however, is plainly Mr. Goodyer's aim, and in his fine rooms he has gathered together everything Eastern that money and enterprise can obtain, and massed together all the colours, all the bizarre and barbarian beauties.' Other sources, drawn only from the first few pages, include The Queen, American Traveller, Court Journal, Jewish World, Land & Water, Pall Mall Budget, Echo, Modern Truth, The Lady's Pictorial ('Goodyear's [sic] red is the red you want. Get it at the Aesthetic Gallery in New Bond-street, Princess Mary of Teck admires it immensely. There's a recommendation for you.'), The Baby, Aberdeen Herald & Weekly Free Press, Home Art Work, Society Herald, Morning Post, City Press, The Table. Some of the cuttings are arranged under the three headings 'Chinese Embroideries', 'Silk Exhibition May 1890' (at which, according to one cutting, Goodyer had 'a great and well-deserved honour bestowed upon him by the Princess of Wales', who asked for him to be presented to her, 'when she spoke to him most kindly and cordially about his beautiful fabrics'), 'Silk Exhibition Novr. 1890'. Also present is an illustrated handbill, on pink paper, for the 'Masque des Fleurs' ('The COSTUMES for the Masque des Fleurs are supplied by Mr. Goodyer, of Bond Street.'). The last dated cutting is from 8 November 1890. At the back of the volume are three pages, on which are laid down two substantial advertisements from 1889 announcing the opening of the Aesthetic Gallery, together with two calling cards - one for Goodyer personally and the other, illustrated, for the Gallery, as well as a handbill announcing the opening of the Gallery and a printed invitation to its first exhibition. Accompanying the album is a box containing around 200 more loose cutting, almost all attached to slips of the two cuttings agencies. The latest dated cutting appearing to be one from the Morning Post of 29 April 1925 ('In this veritable palace of wonders there are oval divans, beds with shell-shaped heads, settees and chairs, reproductions of Jacobean tapestries, until one is bewildered with the beauties, but proud to hear Mr. Goodyer say: "Yes! All are English made." ' Also included in the box is a small collection of ephemera, including three photographs, two apparently of the interior of the Gallery, and another, 29 x 24 cm, showing its exterior, after its relocation to 174 Regent's Street, and those of the shops on either side, the facia reading 'GOODYERS | COLOUR DESIGN FABRIC SPECI. Three library catalogue entries of the 2 volume set mention a folding portrait but it is not clear whether this was issued with this first volume. This is the Clement K Shorter copy with his handsome art nouveau bookplate with the Walter Crane monogram. Shorter (1857-1926) a book collector and editor of the Illustrated London News and several other journals was also founder The Sketch (1893), The Sphere (1900), and The Tatler (1903). L'opera documenta la produzione di artisti ed atelier come Lalique , De Feure, Gallé, Guimard, Tiffany and Co., ecc., nella grandiosa esposizione parigina, trattando di ogni possibile declinazione delle arti decorative: oreficeria, mobili, arazzi, legature, oggetti di uso comune, pizzi, ricami, vasellame, ecc. Roger Marx (Nancy, 1859-Parigi, 1913), padre di un altro celebre critico come Claude Roger Marx, fu critico e storico dell'arte dallo spiccatissimo e pionieristico gusto anche per le arti decorative e applicate (egli fece approntare una sezione ad esse dedicata al Salon del 1891) e strenuo difensore delle avanguardie estetiche del proprio tempo, segnatamente dell'Impressionismo. Unusually, we have 2 copies of this scarce book for sale on the website at the same time, but this one has a special provenance. Formerly owned by William Moorcroft (1872 - 1945). Moorcroft initially studied art at Burslem, Staffordshire then later in London and Paris. Whilst working for James McIntyre and Co Ltd in around 1896 he started experimenting with highly lustred glazes and Oriental decorations. This developed into an art nouveau style which Moorcroft is still known for. His techniques were innovative and highly guarded secrets. His wares were sold through Liberty in London and Tiffany in New York. In 1913 he founded his own factory and the business was successful. Queen Mary appointed him 'Potter to the Queen' in 1928, a title which was marked on his pottery. He continues to enjoy enormous popularity today amongst collectors. This volume carries his distinctive bookplate and is also accompanied by a postcard addressed to Mr and Mrs Morris from Port Said in Egypt in 1938. Burlington Magazine Monographs, Chinese Art, an introductory review of painting, ceramics, textiles, bronzes, sculpture, jade etc by Roger Fry, Laurence Binyon, A F Kendrick, Bernhard Rackham, W Percival Yetts, Osvald Siren and W W Winkworth. Published for the Burlington Magazine by B T Batsford, London. First edition 1925. This monograph formed the basis of the more common 1935 handbook on Chinese Art also published by Batsford. This substantial volume contains a wealth of high quality information on Chinese Art. Very good condition. Black cloth covers with gilt emblem to cover and gilt lettering to spine. Only minor wear on covers and minor bumping to extremities. Printed endpapers in Chinese silk design. Text is very good to near fine. William Moorcroft bookplate to first pastedown. 62pp + many wonderful pages of plates + xviii (to front and rear) + a substantial section of art dealer advertisements of the day. Le tavv., disegnate ed incise con estrema finezza d'esecuzione, raffigurano una moltitudine di cancelli, recinzioni, balaustre, griglie, gazebo, tetti per magazzini, ateliers, capannoni, mercati, serre, ponti, armature e travature in ferro per ogni sorta di costruzione, tettoie, pensiline, verande, impiantiti, scale, gallerie, etc. La terza e la quarta parte contengono, in fine, rispettivamente 2 pp. e 8 pp. di esplicazione delle tavole. Ottimo esemplare. Edizione originale, rarissima a trovarsi completa di tutte le sue parti, di questa magnifica pubblicazione sull'arte del ferro battuto nella Francia del XIX secolo. Le quattro parti recano sottotitoli differenti: 1) La Serrurerie au XIX siècle. Grilles, balcons, marquises, serres, clotures, panneaux de portes, ornements. 2) La Serrurerie au XIX siècle. Nouveau travaux exécutés dans les Quartiers neufs. 3) Constructions en tous genres exécutées d'après les dessins des principales architectes ou ingénieurs. 4) Marquises - Verhendas - Charpentes - Planchers - Combles - Escaliers - Galeries - Marches. HENRIK VISNAPUU (1890-1951) was one of the leading Estonian poets in the 1920s and 1930s. He was important member of the literary group "Siuru", which was strongly influenced by symbolism. Visnapuu's poems are mainly of the futuristic and expressionistic genre. As in the author's first poetry collection "Amores", so in the four following poetry books "Jumalaga, Ene", "Käoorvik", "Hõbedased kuljused" and "Talihari" mainly present intimate moods and elegiac or grotesquely provocative attitude. Young Visnapuu's poetry language and style is very individualistic and diverse. South-Estonian dialects exist side by side with innovative language forms, in order to obtain verse sonority uses poet galore poetic liberties. Other poets began to follow this innovation, and these morphological forms became the trademark of the Estonian Avant-Garde. VOLDEMAR KANGRO-POOL (1889-1943) famous Estonian graphic artist and painter. He was probably one of the best-known students of Kristjan Raud. Kangro-Pool also received a remarkably good international education in Munich, Paris, Hamburg. In 1913-1914 he was a member of futurist literary and artistic grouping "Moment". Since 1918 he joined the progressive art association named "Pallas", being one of its founders. The artist's art legacy is rather rare. A diverse road was a sign of the artist's restless character, which is proved by his early works. In youthful years the artist was influenced by the literary grouping "Siuru" and Ado Vabbe creation. Kangro-Pool early works are characterized as Art Nouveau and Futurism. Also he is known for his Expressionist and Jugendstil erotic drawings in Indian ink and Symbolist Wood Engravings. The second half of the 1920s witnesses the obvious calming down of an artist. He was already sufficiently well-known artist and his earlier restless futuristic themes are being replaced with peaceful, thoughtful manner of close-to-nature landscapes.
