Descrizione libro: Imprimeie lithographique du Gouvernement 1844-1845, Papeete, 1844. 1 vol. grand in-folio (43 livraisons et 2 suppléments sur les 60 publiées), demi-basane verte, dos lisse orné de filets dorés (reliure de l'époque). Premier journal de Tahïti en langue française « né au son du canon ». « Ce journal paraît tous les huit jours. On s'abonne au bureau du journal à Papeïti, île de Tahïti. Le prix de l'abonnement est, par an, de 30 F (6 pisatres). Le prix d'insertion des annonces est de 50 c. (un réal par 5 lignes ». L'Océanie française était tiré par l'imprimerie lithographique du gouvernement, qui avait été « installée le 1er mars 1844 dans une case appartenant au chef Tati. Elle était située près de l'hôtel Franklin, à Papeete, à l'endroit même où est installée actuellement l'imprimerie du gouvernement. L'imprimerie était dirigée par un dénommé Ricard, qui avait comme aide un matelot de l'Uranie, Amiot ». Bien que tiré par l'imprimerie du Gouvernement, il ne s'agit pas cependant d'un journal officiel. « Le journal de Tahïti paraît, sans nul doute, avec l'autorisation du gouverneur, mais sa direction appartient entièrement au rédacteur » précise celui-ci dans le numéro du 24 avril 1845. Il s'agit d'Edmond Ginoux de La Coche, 33 ans, homme de lettres, enfant terrible d'une famille respectueuse de l'ordre établi. Sous la Restauration, ses parents, nobles légitimistes et catholiques, l'orientent vers le droit puis l'armée ; il aboutit à 23 ans à une opposition totale à son milieu et devient journaliste républicain, anti-clérical, et bientôt farouche anti-colonialiste. Sa quête intellectuelle le conduit à s'interroger sur l'histoire des civilisations. Un engouement soudain pour les voyages lui fait affronter des terres mal connues afin de rencontrer « les sauvages » : il les côtoie, parle le Kanaque, les prend en affection. Accompagné d'une femme aimée, Adèle de Dombasle, il fonde ce journal à Papeete ; sa curiosité sans bornes l'amène à collecter dans l'entière Polynésie des objets dont il cherche la raison d'être. Devenu rentier sous le Second Empire grâce à la fortune familiale, il réunit à Nice dans une somptueuse villa la collection d'objets polynésiens et américains qui sera connue sous le nom de « Musée Ginoux ». Le journal, lithographié sur trois colonnes, était tiré sur un beau papier vergé portant le filigrane D. & C. Blaw. Le numéro du 2 février 1845 nous apprend qu'on en distribuait alors 98 exemplaires à Papeete. Le journal cessa de paraître au numéro 60 en juillet 1845, par ordre du ministre de la Marine. One month later, the French decided to recognize American independence, after learning of the American victory at Saratoga, and the defeat of Burgoyne. By January 8th, the French foreign minister Charles Gravier, Comte de Vergennes, informed American envoys that France was ready to engage in an alliance. This spectacular first edition French map was copied from British sources and shows the theater of conflict between the Americans and British during the third year of the War of Independence. It depicts British troop positions at Germantown and Frankfort, Pennsylvania. The only military notation on the map is the one American victory against the French at Saratoga, which was instrumental in bringing France into the war on the American side. Bernard BOUTET DE MONVEL (1841-1949) réalise de 1926 à 1929, plusieurs portraits des grandes familles new-yorkaises, banquiers, industriels, musiciens. Au vu du prix de ses effigies, la crise 1929 met un terme à son activité de portraitiste : il peint des vues de New-York, Chicago, et des natures mortes. Dans les années trente, les affaires de portraitiste reprennent, il insère alors ces éléments dans les portraits, dont l'arrière-plan comporte des vues de ville ou des plantes. Il effectue plusieurs allers et retours entre Paris et New-York, travaillant pour les français et les américains. Il représente cette jeune femme en buste, coiffée d'une toque, sur fond d'architecture, devant la place de la Concorde et la Madeleine avec en fond un quadrillage destiné à la réalisation d'une peinture à l'huile. The introduction by Baumgarten is first published here and contains footnotes that are a list of books published on the Americas prior to the publication of this work. In original paper boards with titles stamped on leather labels on the spines. Complete with eight maps and sixty one plates, including frontispiece in volume one. Plates are bound into the rear of each volume on blank leaves and pull out of the text block. Each single page plate is folded once into the text block and were designed not to rest against any other printing so that none of the plates have any offsetting and have remained clean and bright. Part One is mainly a translation of MOEURS DES SAUVAGES AMERICAINS COMPARES AUX MOEURS DES PREMIERS TEMPS by Joseph Francois Lafiteau and published in Paris in 1723, which describes with great detail the customs, religious beliefs and social organization of the Native Americans. Part Two contains extracts from Rochefort, Charlevoix, and other writers. Many depictions of early Native Americans. Manuscrit d'un article inédit sur la fameuse expédition en 1849 du « Preble » à Nagasaki. L'auteur, Athananase-Philippe Cucheval-Clarigny (1821-1895), normalien et chartiste, agrégé d'histoire, préféra la carrière de journaliste à l'érudition. Il écrivit de nombreux articles politiques, littéraires et financiers dans le Constitutionnel, Le Moniteur, La Patrie, La Revue des Deux-Mondes, avant de devenir directeur de La Presse en 1866. Il s'agit ici de la première relation en français de la longue croisière de la frégate américaine « Preble » (commandée par James Glynn) dans l'Océan Pacifique. Partie de New York en septembre 1846, elle rejoignit l'escadre du Pacifique où elle resta durant toute la guerre entre les États-Unis et le Mexique. Après quoi le « Preble » fut chargé à l'été 1848 de traverser le Pacifique pour aller en mer de Chine. Le commandant Glynn reçut alors pour mission d'aller à Nagasaki pour négocier avec les autorités de l'endroit la libération d'une quinzaine de marins américains retenus prisonniers depuis 1846 par les Japonais à la suite d'un naufrage. Le « Preble » arriva à Nagasaki le 17 avril 1849. C'était la première fois qu'un navire américain abordait au Japon. Glynn finit par obtenir la libération des marins et les ramena à Hong-Kong. Le « Preble » repartit ensuite pour les ÉTATs-Unis via les Iles Sandwich et Honolulu. Après avoir été radoubée en juillet 1850 à San Francisco, la frégate ne rentra à New York que le 1er janvier 1851, quatre ans et quatre mois après en être partie. A son retour le commandant Glynn fit des recommandantions au gouvernement américain pour qu'il noue des relations diplomatiques avec le Japon. Augustin de Saint-Hilaire (1779-1853), explorateur et botaniste orléannais, fit un périple de 1816 à 1830 de plus de 9000 kilomètres à travers le Brésil. Durant ce voyage, il étudia un nombre considérable d'espèces animales, végétales et minérales. C'est à lui, dit-on, que les Sud-Américains doivent l'exploitation à grande échelle du maté. A son retour à Paris, il succéda à Lamarck à l'Académie des Sciences en 1830, et devint le président de cette institution en 1835. Son influence sur la botanique brésilienne est de tout premier ordre et ses publications sur la flore de ce pays restent toujours très recherchées. First edition, and desireable second state, of a separately-published French map devoted to the northeastern theater of the war, with the Battle of Saratoga identified. "The Plate went through many states. Copies are also found with dates of 1778, 1779 . The Library of Congress has copies in two states, with the same cartouche and illustration but differing coverage; one extends slightly north of Mohawk Valley and barely reaches Cape Cod, the other extends north to Quebec and includes all of the Gulf of Maine" (McCorkle). The present map is an example of the second state, the more desirable as it shows a larger region. There are two areas of the map which include battle detail. Just north and northwest of Philadelphia, British positions are indicated in red near Germantown and Frankfort, reflecting the British positions following their occupation of Philadelphia and just following the Battle of Germantown. In the area around Saratoga, five British positions are shown in red with the inscription: "Camp du Général Burgoyne ou il a capitule le 16 Octobre 1777." Rare separately-issued map of the British Colonies during the American Revolution. France's entry into the American War of Independence in 1778 engendered great interest among the French public for maps of the region. Phelippeaux here depicts the theatre of war, showing the region from Hudson's Bay in the north to the Gulf of Mexico in the south and far west well beyond the Mississippi River. Cartographically, the map generally follows John Mitchell's famous map, depicting the region in good detail, with many towns, roads, forts and Indian villages identified. French Louisiana extends eastwards as far as the Appalachian Mountains and westward well into territories claimed by Spain; the original British Colonial grant for Virginia and Carolina are shown extending westward to the edge of the map. The cession of Louisiana west of the Mississippi to Spain is not depicted. However, the cession of Upper Louisiana to the British under the 1763 Treaty of Paris, is clearly shown. The decorative cartouche, engraved by E. Voysard, shows the title on a banner hung from two trees, with battle flags on either side and a large cannon and battery in the foreground. The title suggests that this "Carte Generale" was issued as a sister map to Brion de la Tour's "Carte du Théatre de la Guerre entre les Anglais et les Américains: Dressée d'après les Cartes Anglaises les plus modernes" (1777). Signed on the inside title page by Robert Frank, Books signed by Robert Frank are as rare as hens teeth, and seldom seen. With the aid of his major artistic influence, the photographer Walker Evans, Frank secured a grant from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1955 to travel across the United States and photograph its society at all strata. He took his family along with him for part of his series of road trips over the next two years, during which time he took 28,000 shots. Only 83 of those were finally selected by him for publication in The Americans. Frank's journey was not without incident. While driving through Arkansas, Frank was arbitrarily thrown in jail after being stopped by the police; elsewhere in the South, he was told by a sheriff that he had an hour to leave town. Shortly after returning to New York in 1957, Frank met Beat writer Jack Kerouac on the sidewalk outside a party and showed him the photographs from his travels. Kerouac immediately told Frank Sure I can write something about these pictures, and he contributed the introduction to the U.S. edition of The Americans. Frank also became lifelong friends with Allen Ginsberg, and was one of the main visual artists to document the Beat subculture, which felt an affinity with Frank's interest in documenting the tensions between the optimism of the 1950s and the realities of class and racial differences. The irony that Frank found in the gloss of American culture and wealth over this tension gave Frank's photographs a clear contrast to those of most contemporary American photojournalists, as did his use of unusual focus, low lighting and cropping that deviated from accepted photographic techniques. This divergence from contemporary photographic standards gave Frank difficulty at first in securing an American publisher. Les Americains was first published in 1958 by Robert Delpire in Paris, and finally in 1959 in the United States by Grove Press, where it initially received substantial criticism. Popular Photography, for one, derided his images as meaningless blur, grain, muddy exposures, drunken horizons and general sloppiness. Though sales were also poor at first, Kerouac's introduction helped it reach a larger audience because of the popularity of the Beat phenomenon. Over time and through its inspiration of later artists, The Americans became considered a seminal work in American photography and art history, and the work with which Frank is most clearly identified. In 1961, Frank received his first individual show, entitled Robert Frank: Photographer, at the Art Institute of Chicago. He also showed at MOMA in New York in 1962. The photographs reproduced within were made by Frank on his travels around the United States in 1955 and 1956 while supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship. Covers clean and bright with the exception of a light stain on the spine (4cm, from crown) which extends very slightly to the upper and lower panels. Very faint corresponding stain to text block near crown (see image). A few small spots on the lower panel. Corners square and firm. Upper fore-edge corners of last few leaves faintly colored (p. 173 to rear free end paper, see image), all else internally fine.
