Descrizione libro: 1925. VAN VECHTEN, Carl. A Collection of 429 Original Photographs. 132 x 85mm. Various places and dates. The William Earl Collection of Photographs by Carl Van Vechten. A collection of 429 original photographs by Carl Van Vechten of which 391 are portraits and 38 are of of miscellaneous subjects, including a few unidentified portraits, with Van Vechten's blind stamp in the margins. As was often the case with Van Vechten's photographs, the majority were printed on postcard stock. The collection comes from the dancer William Earl, a friend of Van Vechten's, and the majority of the photographs are annotated on the verso by Van Vechten, and some are also inscribed by him to Earl. Carl Van Vechten was an important figure in the cultural life of America during the first half of the twentieth century. He first made his mark as a music critic for the New York Times, but was also a prolific novelist and literary critic. In the early 1930s Miguel Covarrubias introduced Van Vechten to the 35 mm Leica camera, and he began photographing his large circle of friends and acquaintances. His earlier career as a writer and his wife's experience as an actress provided him with access to both fledgling artists and established cultural figures of the time. Van Vechten's portraits are frequently busts or half-length poses in front of bold backdrops. Dancers were usually photographed on stage. Van Vechten did his own darkroom work, but frequently used an assistant to help set up lights for portrait sittings. According to Davis "his work constitutes the single most integrated vision of American arts and letters produced in his era". Among the subjects who he photographed represented in this collection are: Alvin Ailey, Judith Anderson, Pearl Bailey, Harry Belafonte, Baroness Blixen (Isak Dinesen), Marlon Brando, Dave Brubeck, Truman Capote, Carol Channing, Marc Chagall, Diahann Carroll, William Faulkner, Ben Gazzara, Dizzy Gillespie, Reri Grist, Julie Harris, Melissa Hayden, Al Hirschfield, Geoffrey Holder, Lena Horne, Kim Hunter, Burl Ives, Eartha Kitt, Hugh Laing, Joe Louis, Alicia Markova, Robert Morse, Eugene O'Neill, Laurence Olivier, Leontyne Price, Vincent Price, Ned Rorem, Bobby Short, Simone Signoret, Gertrude Stein, Paul Taylor, Alice B. Toklas, Ethel Waters and George Zoritch. As a major champion of African-American culture and patron of many of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance, it is not surprising that many of his subjects were African-American, and this collection has a fair representation of African American subjects. Van Vechten was also a lover of dance, and this collection contains many photographs of some of the leading dancers of the twentieth century including significant groups of Alicia Markova(68), Melissa Hayden(20), and Hugh Laing(76). Keith F.Davis. The Passionate Observer. Photographs of Carl Van Vechten. Plates 38 and 55. Also variants of plates 45,46 and 102. Codice libro della libreria 129009

Descrizione libro: Monte Carlo Andre Sauret, 1962. First edition. Folio ( 36 x 27 cm), limited to 270 numbered copies. With an original double page (46.1 x 30 cm) crayon and watercolor drawing to the verso of the justification page, signed and dated "Marc Chagall 1973" (lower right) and dedicated "pour ami Gustav Zumsteg" (lower left). Comprising title page, text in French by Jean Leymarie, justification, table of contents and the complete set of seven lithographs (including three in colors), on Arches paper, signed in pencil by the artist and the publisher on the justification page, unbound as issued. Contained in a Bristol-lined Arches wove cover. The box covered with grey-green cloth, printed in gold on the front, faint offprint on text pages, an excellent example. Autograph presentation copy from Chagall to his friend Gustav Zumsteg, with an original watercolour. In 1960, Marc Chagall was asked by the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem to realise twelve designs in stained glass for its new synagogue. To him, this work was a "modest gift to the Jewish people". Inspired by his life-long study of the Bible, Chagall realised these designs on the theme of Moses' blessing of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Following Judaism's injunction against depicting human images, they are composed of animals, flowers, trees and Jewish symbols. Each window, dominated by a specific colour, contains a quotation from the individual blessings. Many considered these windows as Chagall's crowning achievement, and the artist himself confessed his emotions as regards to this work: "they have completely transformed my vision, they gave me a great shock, made me reflect. I don't know how I shall paint from now on, but I believe something is taking place." Before their installation in the synagogue, the twelve windows were exhibited in the Louvre and the Modern Museum of Arts of New York, where they had the greatest success. "Peter Salz, Curator of the Museum's department of painting and sculpture exhibitions and director of the exhibition, believes that the Chagall windows are among the finest work done in stained glass since medieval times." (MoMA) On January 6, 1962, the newly decorated synagogue was dedicated in presence of the artist. This work contains Chagall's sketches and studies for the windows. The lithographies, highly colourful, show an insight into the making of these exceptional art works, along with the Biblical quotations they illustrate. Gustav Zumsteg, who died in 2013 at the age of almost 90, studied and worked as a young man in Paris, where he met and befriended Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. He started as an apprentice at the silk maker Abraham, a supplier of fabrics for fashion houses such as Yves Saint Laurent, and later bought the company. Zumsteg was one of the most important patrons of Zurich's modern-art museum Kunsthaus and assembled an important collection of modern works of art including paintings as well as illustrated books, often dedicated to him, such as the present work. Descrizione libro: 1927. Condizione libro: Fine. October in Belorussia - Original Painting capturing the Pogroms and the urgency of Jewish migrationAKSELROD, Meer. October in Belorussia. 1927. Original watercolor, gouache and pencil on paper. Image measures 12 inches x 19 inches; framed 24 inches x 30 inches. Initialed on the front by the artist and signed on the verso with an additional pencil sketch of a nude. Excellent condition. Elegantly framed. ONE OF THE MOST DISTINGUISHED MODERN RUSSIAN JEWISH ARTISTS, Meer Akselrod (1902-1970) was born in Molodechno, a small "shtetl" in Belorussia not far from Vitebsk, the native town of Marc Chagall. Like Chagall the images of his Jewish village upbringing have served as inspiration for much of his work. The years immediately following the Russian Revolution were a golden age for the arts in that nation. Painting, literature, music and theatre were all supported and encouraged. Meer Akselrod (known as Mark to his friends) benefited greatly from this artistic spring. Unfortunately by the 1930’s the avant-garde was no longer favored and artists were forced to conform to the dictates of Socialist Reform or leave the country as did Chagall and Kandinsky. Akselrod went underground instead and began to paint more realistic imagery. His Jewish content made him always a figure of controversy with the communist regime. ILLUMINATING HIS NATIVE SHTETL. At the time of this painting the artist was in his mid-twenties and it is one of a series that he completed over the course of several years that illuminated his native "shtetl". Belorussia had long been a target of murderous pogroms as the Jews there, always subject to economic polarization, ethnic inequality and religious intolerance, were understandably receptive to revolutionary ideas. The early "October" massacres of the 20th century (1903-05) were never to be forgotten. This painting portrays a crowded street scene of frantic villagers pushing carts, carrying children and large sacks of belongings and food. There is a fervent sense of movement. They are rushing to leave, to escape. In the background is what appears to be a soldier on horseback rounding up an indistinct group of villagers. A horrible sense of irony accompanies this image from the hindsight of the 21st century for in 1943 over 16,000 Jews were killed in Belorussia. The illustrated biographical book Meer Akselrod by Elena Akselrod: Jerusalem, 1993. contains this reference on page 32: " as a student in the faculty of the graphic arts, Akselrod chose gouache and tempera as the media for his diploma work. Akselrod’s diploma work was studies for large-scale murals on the theme October in Belorussia. These many-figured compositions were to depict the capture of factories and estates, political meetings and so forth. In 1935 Akselrod was commissioned to do murals for Government House in Minsk. Using his gouaches of 1927 as a starting point, the artist did a series of new studies. This work was never completed, though Akselrod did paint the canvas, The Capture of the Estate." Plate 36 reproduced in this book, White Poles in Minsk [1927] is from this same series.PROVENANCE: An inscription, signed R.[Rivka] Rubina, (the artist’s wife and an important Yiddish author in Russia) is placed near the nude sketch on the verso of the painting. It states that this piece was given as a gift to Ella Minukhin. After Minukhin’s death it reverted to Elena Akselrod, his daughter, from whom this work was purchased. Codice libro della libreria 54

Descrizione libro: Fernand Mourlot, Paris, 1975. Lindner, Richard (illustratore). Elephant folio. (38)ff. One of 150 copies. Contains ten lithographs measuring 28 1/2 by 20 3/4 inches, each signed by the artist, Richard Lindner, and numbered and counter-initialed by Fernand Mourlot, the printer/publisher who produced the lithographs. In his introduction, Ionesco describes Lindner as "one of the great contemporary masters. His work lies within the realm of caricature, painting, and theater. It is interpretation of reality, but reality is not realistic." Mourlot, who worked with all the great artists of the twentieth century, writes that Lindner created ten original gouaches and watercolors for this series, supervised the transfer to the stones, corrected the colors, retouched the plates, and oversaw the printing with such a perfectionist's eye that "only Marc Chagall forced us to run the plates so many times through the presses." An extremely fine copy, loose as issued, in a printed quarter-vellum clamshell box. Codice libro della libreria 15455

Descrizione libro: 1903. Soft ground etching in black and white, 60x50 cm including frame, artist's name etched in black at bottom right of etching, with his Hebrew name underneath (Haim Aaron ben David); etching glued on a white background with Theodor Herzl's own signature in pencil at the bottom right; at the bottom left of the picture is a star of David with Hermann Struck's initials in it, to its right is his signature in pencil. Very good condition. Struck's most famous work and one of the symbols of zionism - a powerful portrait of Theodor Herzl, signed by Herzl himself. Hermann Struck (1876-1944) and Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) met several times in Egypt and Vienna before this portrait etching was created in 1903. A fervent Zionist and admirer of Herzl's, Struck made his preparatory sketches for the portrait when he visited the political activist's house in Vienna. During the sixth Zionist Congress in Basel in August 1903, the two met again and on this occasion Herzl asked Struck to allow him to sign a few of the first copies of the etching. Struck depicted Herzl's visionary side by giving us the impression that he is looking towards the future. His radiance is all the more flagrant as the dark background makes his solemn face stand out. Although Struck made two additional etchings of this portrait after Herzl's death, it is the 1903 version that has remained the most famous of his works, and the most iconic of all the portraits of Theodor Herzl. Indeed, the image came to be known as one of the emblems of Zionism and has been used on various posters, products and catalogs ever since: "Within a short period of time the etching became so well known that it emerged as a symbol of Zionism, especially after the death of the charismatic leader in 1904. It was then that the portrait won the respect of all the Zionist circles. By the time the State of Israel was founded, this portrait of Theodor Herzl was considered the epitome of Zionism itself. It decorated the walls of every Zionist event, anywhere." (Hermann Struck, Printmaking Artist. Tefen Open Museum, 2007, page 38). Hermann Struck was a German-Israeli artist who gained fame for his etchings. He published a leading work on the subject, Die Kunst des Radierens, in 1908. He was commissioned to etch portraits of many leading figures of his time, including Einstein and Herzl. Struck acquired a reputation as a teacher of graphic art, and began to teach the techniques of the art print while still in Germany. Among his many students were Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, Marc Chagall, Jacob Steinhardt, and Joseph Budko. He moved to Haifa in 1922. Today the city has a museum dedicated to him. Theodor Herzl, a Hungarian journalist of Jewish descent, is regarded as the founding father of political Zionism. By the time the etching was made, he was already known for having chaired the first Zionist congress in 1897. In 1896, at 35 years old, he had published Der Judenstaat, Versuch einer Modernen Lösung der Judenfrage (The Jewish State, Proposal of a modern solution for the Jewish question) in Vienna. The previous year, Herzl had witnessed the Dreyfus affair in Paris and had been appalled at the outbreak of anti-Semitism that it had generated in the "birthplace of human rights". He came to the conclusion that the creation of an independent Jewish state during the 20th century would be the best way for Jews to escape European anti-Semitism. Codice libro della libreria 91304

Faulkner's collection of short stories that masquerades as a novel, set in his "apocryphal county" of Yoknapatawpha, Mississippi. Descrizione libro: Kiev: Kultur-Lige, 1922. Soft cover. Condizione libro: Very Good. 1st Edition. Folio 36x25 cm., illustrated wrappers, with 5 illustrations (2 on white paper). The letterpress text includes typographic designs. Troyer includes a collection of moving poems in response to the pogroms against the Jews in the Ukraine during the civil war. Chagall’s illustrations show “a man with weeping hands, the next [illustration] refers to blood dripping amid sunshine, and the last is a moving drawing of a series of houses over a headless body symbolizing the pogroms” (Apter-Gabriel, 62). Organized at the end of 1917, the Kultur Lige was at the heart of the Jewish cultural renaissance in Kiev, providing education and culture to the Jewish population. It had its own press, which published teaching material, literary and historical studies, literary journals, and children’s books. The artists involved include Lissitzky, Ryback, Chagall and Tchaikov inter alia. This copy with some wear, fading, and restoration to the spine and edges of the original green wrappers, internally very good. This is an unopened and untrimmed copy in a contemporary folding box. Descrizione libro: 1960. First Edition. (CHAGALL, Marc) CAIN, Julien and SORLIER, Charles. The Lithographs of Chagall. Monte Carlo, New York, Boston: André Sauret; George Braziller; Boston Book and Art Shop, 1960-86. Six volumes. Folio, original beige cloth, original dust jackets (themselves original lithographs), original acetates. $11,500.First editions in English of the six-volume catalogue raisonné of Chagall’s lithographs, richly illustrated with 28 original lithographs (including the dust jackets)."Chagall's emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris" (Dictionary of Modern Art). For Chagall, the medium of lithography did not come easily. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent print-making process. "For many long months Chagall came and worked tirelessly, and his dissatisfaction allowed him to have only a few of his first attempts printed" (Sorlier, 45). Volumes I and II contain 24 of the original 28 lithographs published throughout the series; the dust jackets and frontispieces of Volumes III and IV account for the remaining four. (Volume V was published near the end of Chagall's life, and Volume VI was published posthumously.) All were issued separately over a period of 26 years and are very scarce as a complete set. All volumes published simultaneously in English and French. Volumes I and II also issued in a deluxe signed limited edition of only 100 and 150 copies. Gauss, 391. Freitag 1914. See Cramer, 43, 56, 77, 94. Cloth of Volume II mildly toned, occasional minor nick or rub to extremities of dust jackets and acetate. A beautiful set in about-fine condition. Descrizione libro: Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York, 1940. Original artwork. Hilla Rebay (born Baroness Hilla Rebay von Ehrenwiesen) was a notable European artist in the early 20th Century. In 1913 her work was shown alongside artists such as Archipenko, Brancusi, Chagall, Delauney, Rivera in Paris. Rebay immigrated to the United States in 1927 and is best known as the first director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum as well as her role as a friend, confidant and advisor to Solomon R. Guggenheim. She was instrumental in Guggenheim's pursuit to build a collection of modern artists such as Vassily Kandisnky, Paul Klee, and Marc Chagall. In 1930 she organizes the landmark exhibition entitled the "Solomon R. Guggenheim Collection of Non-Objective Paintings," which traveled to Charleston, Philadelphia and Baltimore. When the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is established in 1937, Rebay is appointed its first curator and in 1939, under the auspices of the Guggenheim Foundation, the Museum of Non-Objective Painting opens in rented quarters at 24 East Fifty-fourth Street with its first exhibition "The Art of Tomorrow." In 1943 Solomon R. Guggenheim and Hilla Rebay commission Frank Lloyd Wright to design a permanent structure for the Museum of Non-Objective Painting. After Solomon's death in 1949, a strife between Rebay and the Guggenheim family, especially Peggy Guggenheim, lead Rebay to resign as director in 1952. When the new Museum opened in October 1959 Rebay was not invited and it is said that she never set foot in the museum. Rebay retreated from public life and spent the rest of her days at her estate in Westport, Connecticut, where she died in 1967.This collection of photographs and publications are a testimony to the activities as well as the influence emanating from Hilla Rebay's tenure at the Guggenheim Foundation and Museum in a time when America made its decisive strides to catch up to the trend setting European artists and art scene to become a dominating force in the world of art. Rebay's activities, influence and foresight not only drew European cutting edge artists to engage on the American scene but at the same time invigorated American artists while continuously advising Solomon R. Guggenheim in acquiring artwork for the collection. Whether it is the opening exhibition "Art of Tomorrow" or the Memorials for Kandisnky and Moholy-Nagy, the program of the Museum garnered attention worldwide and subsequently loan exhibitions were made to museums on the continent and in 1943 the plan for new, permanent location was launched by commissioning the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Rebay also engaged the fashion designer B. H. Wragge and the Bonwit Teller department store in a project combining non-objective art with contemporary fashion design in the window displays of the department store. The collection presented here contains 85 photographs and 7 publications. It documents important milestones for Hilla Rebay and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation including major publications, photographs by Ben Greenhaus and authentic handwriting by Hilla Rebay and her staff. Photographs29 exhibition view photographs of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, Museum of Non-Objective painting. 22 photographs (8 x 10") with white border and 7 photographs (7 1/4 x 9 1/4") w/o border, gelatin silver prints. The exhibition shows works of Scarlett, Kandinsky, Rebay, Bauer, Nebel, Moholo-Nagy, Schwab, Xceron. The photographs are numbered from 1. through 29. and are to be looked at in succession as to give the onlooker a feeling of the museum, so stated on a separate piece of paper opening with: "Interiors of The Museum of Non-Objective Painting, New York, to be replaced by the New Museum, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.". The verso of the photographs are stamped with names of the artists, titles and medium of the works exhibited and contain a typed reference as to the location in the museum. Contains a duplicate of # 10 of the photographs. This exhibition probably was curated by Hilla Rebay around 1946-1948. 12 photogra. Codice libro della libreria 38914

Descrizione libro: Ambroise Vollard., Paris., 1902. 4to. (300 x 250 mm). pp. x, 294. Half-title with justification verso, printed title with vignette by Bonnard, 3 leaves with 'Préface du Traducteur' and Longus' text illustrated with 156 original lithographs by Bonnard (printed in monochrome, green or blue), leaf with 'Table des Matières', final leaf with achevé d'imprimer. Loose as issued in original publisher's printed wrappers with Bonnard's vignette and titles to front cover and spine in black. From the edition limited to 250 numbered copies, with this one of 200 on 'hollande à la forme, fabriqué spécialement par la maison VAN GELDER avec le filigrane 'Daphnis et Chloé''. Also included with this copy, loosely inserted, is the original prospectus for the book: two bifolia in the same format as the published book including the title, six pages of text and illustration (pp. 224 - 229) with three lithographs by Bonnard, and the final leaf verso with the details of the edition. 'The lithographs, of an unprecedented lightness of touch, have been printed with such subtlety and skill that you seem to see the original crayon, and they, like the text, have that marvellous spontaneity that will remain forever one of Bonnard's greatest gifts . '. (J. Guignard, Le Livre, 1942). The only known work of the Greek Longus, Daphnis and Chloe, has appealed to numerous artists and illustrators: Pierre Bonnard (1902), Sylvain Sauvage (1925), Aristide Maillol (1937) and Marc Chagall (1961) all produced illustrated editions. The tale - one of the least tragic of the Greek canon - tells of the love of two foundlings raised together, the eponymous hero and heroine, who each harbour an unsuspected love for the other, suffer various reverses of fortune (including Chloe's kidnap by pirates) before a happy resolution for all parties. Descrizione libro: 1956. First Edition. CHAGALL, Marc. Illustrations for the Bible. Text by Jean Wahl. With an appreciation by Meyer Schapiro. New York: Harcourt, Brace, (1956). Folio (10-1/2 by 14 inches), original pictorial boards, original dust jacket. $8500.Scarce first American edition, published the same year as the first Paris edition, of Chagall’s extraordinary illustrations for the Hebrew Bible, with 105 etchings reproduced in heliogravure, as well as 12 black-and-white and 16 color lithographs prepared by Chagall especially for the present work and printed by Mourlot Frères, in very scarce original dust jacket.A breathtaking blend of Chagall's childhood experience of the world of the Hebrew Bible as "another world that still existed behind the world of workaday reality" and his experience of Palestine during a 1931 trip, the artist's 105 etchingsâ€"together with 12 black-and-white and 16 chromolithographs composed especially for this bookâ€"constitute an "astonishing unity of word and image, of visual representation and nonvisual suggestion… The picture is not there to cover, sustain or adorn the event, but to report it plainly and yet in all its temporal and eternal significance… Chagall's Bible etchings have the same religious force as the Bible itself" (Meyer, 383, 388, 393). The massive undertaking occupied Chagall off and on from 1931 to 1956, when the first, two-volume Paris edition saw print. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and, of course, Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent medium. See Sorlier, 62-81; Cramer, 100-101. Owner signature and ink stamp to front pastedown, embossed stamp to title page.Very faint dampstain just affecting very edge of title page; text and plates clean and fine. Boards with a hint of toning, mild wear to spine ends only. Very scarce dust jacket, typically not present, with edge-wear, substantial chipping, and tape reinforcement, very good.
