In October 1927 Miro completed the gouaches, a part of which would be executed for the 8 plates of this book. Jeanne Bucher (1872-1946) published the book in 1928. The artistic involvement of the editor was an integral part of the work of preserving the creation of the avant-garde. Descrizione libro: Paris., Les éditions la Passerelle., 1960. (Masson) Gravures originales en couleurs de André Masson. 45x35cm. 86 pages, 3 leaves, With 16 aquatint etchings by Masson printed in color, and 3 engravings printed in gold on the covers. Folio. Loose as issued in original wrappers, in original hand painted green and violet chemise and slipcase. One of 22 copies on different papers, numbered I to XXII, this being #VI printed on vélin pur chiffon de rives and was reserved for the members of the Bibliophiles de L'Union Francaise, from a total edition of 146 copies. Colophon signed by the artist, the author and the publisher. A mint copy. Cramer, Masson Illustrated Books 47 (erroneously stating that the chemise and slipcase are printed in colour, the present example, clearly original, is hand painted in green and violet). Masson began to work in Paris in the 1920's. His desperate experiences in the trenches of the First War had made him address the question of 'human motivation and man confronting life at its lowest level'. This interest in the subliminal and the spiritual led him into contact with Miró and with the poets of 'proto-surrealism'. When Breton began to organize Surrealist ideas more formally he joined the circle and became one of its most deep-thinking exponents. He soon began to be involved with ideas of 'thought transference', and like Miró began to experiment with forms created under hallucination. After escaping to the USA during the War he returned to Paris in 1945/46 with his interest in printmaking as a medium much stimulated by his contact with Hayter in New York during the War period. This great enthusiasm resulted in some of the most creative post-war 'surrealist' prints by any artist. SAPHIRE, LAWRENCE and PATRICK CRAMER. Cramer 47. André Masson. The Illustrated Books: Catalogue raissoné. Codice libro della libreria 502

Descrizione libro: The Hague., Chez Arnout Leers., 1692. Folio. Original marbled calf binding. There are 16 single and double page engraved illustrations including the title page. Landwehr, R. de Hooghe, 80; Vinet 752, Hoefer 147, Landwehr, Splendid Ceremonies, 147. The account of the arrival of King William III and the reception in the Hague gives the impression that the author's text closely followed the illustrations by de Hooghe. (Landwehr). All of the bibliographies concur that this work is one of the chefs d'oeuvre of de Hooghe. "One of his best books" (Hofer, Baroque Book illustration, 47) and is concurred by Didot, 951. This book represents a height of festivities begun by the Italians at Mantua more than a century before in the triumphant new era which began with the abdication of James II in favor of William of Orange. After the Battle of the Boyne William traveled to Holland to seek the safety of an alliance against the French and this book celebrates that visit. The Dutch text was issued in 1691, a French text in 1692. In this French edition the plates were printed at the same time as the Dutch therefore they are first state. A very fine copy with beautiful impressions of all the plates in the original calf binding. One of the most beautiful Dutch baroque festival books, superbly illustrated with 15 plates by Romeyn de Hooghe, the great chronicler of his age. The frontispiece was commissioned for this reception. This edition, after the Dutch edition, has the introduction of Jean Tronchin de Breuil. There are unnoticeable water contractions on the verso of some of the illustrations not affecting the image. Could have been the expert removal of a collector's stamp. Codice libro della libreria 88
