A Masque of Days from the Last Essays of Elia
Descrizione libro: London - Cassell and Company, 1901. Hardcover. Condizione libro: Very Good. First edition. A first edition of this lovely book, based on the popular Last Essays of Elia by Charles Lamb. The essays in the collection first began appearing in The London Magazine in 1820 and continued to 1825. Lamb's essays were highly popular and were printed in many subsequent editions throughout the nineteenth century. The personal and conversational tone of the essays has charmed many readers; the essays established Lamb in the title he now holds, that of the most delightful of English essayists. With beautiful colour illustrations by Walter Crane on every page. Walter Crane (18451915) was an English artist and book illustrator. His work featured some of the more colourful and detailed beginnings of the child-in-the-garden motifs that would characterize many nursery rhymes and children's stories for decades to come. He was part of the Arts and Crafts movement and produced an array of paintings, illustrations, children's books, ceramic tiles and other decorative arts. Condition: In decorative paper-covered boards. Externally sound, with just some light rubbing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD. Original watercolor diptych from A Masque of Days.
Descrizione libro: 1901, 1901. Two watercolor illustrations on paper, each measuring 7 5/8 by 11 inches (194 x 275 mm), and each signed with Crane's monogram in the lower left corner. This is the original artwork for the spread on pages five and six of A Masque of Days, and it shows twelve winged foot-pages carrying invitation cards. The text above, in Crane's calligraphic script, informs the reader that "cards of invitation had been issued" to commemorate the passage of the year, and "(t)he carriers were THE HOURS" who "went all round and found out the persons invited well enough, with the exceptions of Easter Day, Shrove Tuesday, and a few such Moveable who had lately shifted their quarters." A fine example of a mature work by Crane, together with a copy of the published book. Codice libro della libreria 24136
