Willis calls attention to the fact that there is little evidence that Servetus made use of Pagnino's MS. notes in the 1528 edition but rather that he followed the reprint from this made by the scholarly publisher at Cologne, Melchior Novesianus, in 1541. Be that as it may, Servetus' comments reflect his wide reading and restless intellect, and Calvin's sneering remark that is was "thievish in the editor when he took five hundred livres in payment for the vain trifles and impious follies with which he encumbered almost every page of the book" is scarcely justified." These are missing the title-pages.Polyglot Bibles are editions of the Bible representing the text in several languages side by side. This was necessary after Hebrew ceased to be a living language of the Jews and similar conditions occurred with Latin and Greek in the Christian World. The name Polyglot, is normally restricted to certain particular works, i.e. the Complutensian Polyglot, The Antwerp Polyglot (Biblia Regia), the Paris Polyglot, the Nuremberg Polyglot (or Huter-Polyglot) and this work, the London Polyglot (Walton's Polyglot). The London Polyglot is the most scholarly of all the Polyglots. It was undertaken by Brian Walton, later bishop of Chester, and completed in 1657. The excellence of this Polyglot over others consists in the greater number of old Oriental versions and the much greater and more intelligent work of the editor. Brian Walton (1600 - 1661) was an English divine and scholar. After holding a school mastership and two curacies, he was made rector of St. Martin's Ongar in London in 1628, where he took a leading part in the contest between the London clergy and the citizens about the city tithes, and compiled a treatise on the subject, which is printed in Brewster's Collectanea (1752). His conduct in this matter displayed his ability, but his zeal for the exaction of ecclesiastical dues was remembered in 1641 in the articles brought against him in parliament, which appear to have led to the sequestration of his very considerable preferments. In this retirement he gave himself to Oriental studies and carried through his great work, a Polyglot Bible which should be more complete, cheaper and provided with a better critical apparatus than any previous work of the kind. Copies seem to vary in their contents - some have a general title page in Latin and no divisional titles, and some of these contain a Latin preface as well, while others, like this one, are exclusively Hebrew. There are four Hebrew title-pages present in this volume, including the general title and three (of four) divisional titles. Some copies also, like this one, have the separately-issued Tiberias bound in; here it joins the fourth section in vol. ii, while the first three sections are bound together in vol. i.The editor, Johannes Buxtorf the elder (1564-1629), restores the text of the third Biblia Rabbinica, since the fifth had been in places expurgated by the Inquisition. In the Targum of Canticles, at least, it appears to be a revision of Bomberg II [i.e. the 2nd Biblia Rabbinica], but it also contains a considerable number of changes.the majority are editorial in character (Alexander, The Targum of Canticles, p. 3). Until Buxtorf.no single Christian scholar, Protestant or Catholic, took upon himself the task of editing the entire Hebrew Bible text with masoretic notes, Targums, and biblical commentaries (Burnett, From Christian Hebraism to Jewish Studies, p. 171).Bound at the end (reading the correct way for Latin rather than Hebrew) is Buxtorfs Tiberias, a treatise on biblical diacritic markings first published as a quarto in 1620. The second edition found here was edited by Buxtorfs son and seems to have been published specifically to accompany the bible, matching its format and using a copy of its woodcut title border.

Descrizione libro: Jacobi Friderici Bez & Sociorum, Constance, 1763. Hardcover. Condizione libro: fair. Second edition. Folio. [24], 758, 562,588,12, 571, 48, [48]pp. Original full calf with blind-stamped borders on boards and gold lettering on spines. Raised bands. All edges red. Printer's device on title-page of first volume. Decorative head- and tailpieces. Priest at the Benedictine monastery in Ettingheimmunster, where he headed a team to achieve a Bible translation in understandable German, Cartier died before the completion of the work, in 1749. The first edition of the Ettingheimmunster Bible was published post mortem 2 years later (1751).The team worked 10 years on the Bible translation. Its uniqueness is not only the clear German, but also the division: Whereas Biblia Vulgatae (standard Catholic Bibles) are normally divided into three parts, this Biblia is divided into four parts:1) From Genesis to Chronicles.2) From Ezra to Ben Sirah.3) Prophets and Maccabees.4) New Testament. Contains also a "syllabus" of different Bible editions, Church fathers and exegetes as well as a dissertation on the topic of the earthly paradise.Another sign of its uniqueness is the inclusion of Latin commentaries from Church fathers and contemporary exegetes. Furthermore, the attempt to deliver a clear and understandable German was a clear focus point of the group (and one of the reason why it took so long). It specifically attempts to improve a German that Dietenberger's and Ulenberg's translations had lacked. However, the aim was to still be as close as possible to the Semitic language character of the source. The second edition [our copy] was published in 1763 and has different illustrations than the first edition. Includes numerous full-page copper engravings in elaborate baroque frames. Edge wear on bindings with front joint of first volume cracked, but cover still holding. Heavy rubbing on boards, spines and corners. Heads and tails of spines chipped and worn. Some worming on spine of second volume (not affecting pages). Previous owner's stamp on half title and title-pages. Hole on half title-page and on title-page of first volume (without affecting text). Minor foxing/browning throughout. Text in German, gothic script and Latin. Bindings in overall poor, interior in good+ to very good condition. Codice libro della libreria 18822

THE DEFINITIVE WORK OF PROTESTANT BIBLICAL SCHOLARSHIP TO COME OUT OF THE RENAISSANCE. Under the editorial oversight of Francis Junius (1545-1602), with the use of translations by Tremellius (1510-1580) and Theodore Beza (1519-1605) came the great Junius Bible. OT taken from the Hebrew by both Junius and Tremellius. Apocrypha from Greek by Junius. Intended to stimulate study and debate, different translations of the ancient biblical texts are presented in parallel columns on the same page for the New Testament; Tremellius' translation from the Syriac forming one column, Beze's translation from the Greek forming the other. (8 ll.), 830 pp. Volume I [all published]. Folio (30.2 x 21.3 cm.), contemporary sheep (scraping to covers, some other minor binding defects), spine richly gilt with raised bands in seven compartments, red leather lettering and numbering pieces, gilt letter, edges sprinkled brown, blue and white, marbled endleaves. Internally clean, crisp and very fine. Overall in very good to fine condition. Volume I [all published]. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this handsomely printed erudite work, based on biblical scholarship, that aims to help preachers prepare more lively and erudite sermons. The preface (pp. 1-115) explains dozens of rhetorical figures such as metaphor and allegory, as well as the less familiar diezeugmenon, aposiopesis, prosopeia, etc.: for each Bluteau provides a definition and examples, sometimes quite lengthy. Then he moves on to an alphabetical list of terms that might be chosen as themes for a sermon, with a summary of the meaning of the term, the biblical passages in which it appears, and an outline of points to cover in a sermon focused on it.Bluteau died the year this volume of the @Oraculum appeared. No further volumes were published, and aspiring preachers were left to choose from sermon topics beginning with the letters "A" or "B". Though the work was never completed, the @Oraculum?s very structure emphasizes Bluteau?s fascination with language and lexicons: he is best known for the Vocabulario portuguez e latino, in ten volumes, which appeared in ten volumes, 1712-1728.Born of French parents in London, Rafael Bluteau (1638?1734) spent over fifty years in Portugal, including his late childhood and adolescence, and died in Lisbon. He became fluent in Portuguese, and his ten-volume @Vocabulário Portuguez e Latino, in effect the first Portuguese lexicon, is a work still of immense influence today. Passing from England to France, from France to Portugal, from Portugal to Italy, etc., he could also speak and write in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Latin and Greek. He served on a diplomatic mission to Italy under Duarte Ribeiro de Macedo. When Ribeiro de Macedo died along the way, Bluteau became chief of the mission. A favorite of Queen D. Maria Francisca Isabel of Savoy, wife of D. Afonso VI and then of his brother D. Pedro II, Bluteau participated in the "Conferencias discretas e eruditas" of the third Conde da Ericeira, later becoming close as well to Ericeira's son, the fourth Conde. Bluteau participated in diverse literary Academies favored and sponsored by the Ericeiras, such as the Generosos, Aplicados, etc., and was later nominated to the Real Academia de História by the king himself.---- Monteverde 559.
