Descrizione libro: Venice Franciscus Francisci and Johann Criegher, 1568. Fourth Edition and Third Folio Edition VESALIUS, Andreas. De humani corporis fabrica libri septem. Venice: Franciscus Francisci and Johann Criegher, 1568. Fourth edition, third folio edition. Folio (12 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches; 325 x 220 mm). [12], 510, [45, table], [3, blank]. With twenty full-page engraved woodcut illustrations which are reduced from those of the blocks cut for the first edition (Basel 1543). "The copying was done from the Oporin edition of 1555 and includes eight additions made in 1555. The Basel woodcuts are attributed to Jan Stephan van Calcar, a pupil of Titian. Franceschi states in his dedication to Antonio Montecatini that Giovanni Chrieger cut these Venice copies" (Mortimer). And with numerous other woodcuts in the text. Full contemporary vellum, rebacked. Two corners renewed. Vellum is a bit soiled and rubbed. Some minor worming to pastedowns. Previous owner's book plate (Norwich) on front pastedown. Early signatures on title-page of Horation de Noccis of Castello Horca, and Dr. Bartolomeo Marzo. Early ink signature of Dr. John H. Brinton (gift inscription from Brinton Coxe dated July 9/1891), and stamp of John Brinton on title-page. Ward Brinton (dated 1908) on front free endpaper. Stamp of Oswald Weigel on front pastedown. Overall a very good copy. Chemised and housed ina quarter calf slipcase. "Fine American medical provenance: John Hill Brinton (1832-1907) was a prominent American surgeon from Philadelphia and friend of painter Thomas Eakins. He succeeded Dr. Samuel D. Gross (who was featured in Thomas Eakins' The Gross Clinic), in the chair of surgery at Jefferson College, and also served as the chairman of the Mütter Museum Committee of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He also founded the Philadelphia Pathological Society, and served as the first curator of the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, D.C." (Christie's NY 12/7/12) "Throughout this encyclopedic work on the structure and workings of the human body, Vesalius provided a fuller and more detailed description of human anatomy than any of his predecessors, correcting errors in the traditional anatomical teachings of Galen (which had been obtained from primate rather than human dissections), and arguing that knowledge of human anatomy was to be obtained only from human sources. Even more revolutionary than his criticism of Galen and other medieval authorities was Vesalius’s assertion that the dissection of cadavers must be performed by the physician himself. This ‘hands-on’ principle remained Vesalius’s most lasting contribution to the teaching of anatomy" (Norman Library). "Galen was not merely improved upon: he was superseded; and the history of anatomy is divided into two periods, pre-Vesalian and post-Vesalian" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Adams V606. Choulant/Frank, pp.182. Cushing, Vesalius, VI.A.-4. Osler 569. NLM/Durling 4580. Printing and the Mind of Man 71 (first edition). Waller 9902. HBS 66126. $18,500. Codice libro della libreria 66126

Descrizione libro: Johannes Oporinus, Basel, 1555. "Folio (415x270 mm), [6] ff., 824 pages, [24] ff., including two pages with folding extensions, woodcut title, portrait of Vesalius, 23 full page and ca 200 woodcuts anatomical illustrations in the text, printer’s device on verso of last leaf. Binding: late XVIII century half calf (restored). Partly minor waterstaining and minimal foxing, one folding table with backed tear the other with tears and restored white margin, title somewhat finger stained and with few wormholes. Last page with printer’s device remained at bottom. In general a very good copy with wide margins, title with ownership inscription of the Frankfurt physician Peter Uffenbach (1566-1635). Second folio edition of one of the most important books in the history of medicine, the foundation of modern anatomy and physiology, the greatest work ever published on human anatomy. "The work of Andreas Vesalius constitutes one of the greatest tresaures of western civilization and culture. His masterpiece, De Humani corporis fabrica and its companion volume the Epitome, issued in Basel in 1543, established with startling suddenness the beginning of modern observational science and research . his book is not only one of the most remarkable known to science, it is one of the most noble and magnificent volumes in the history of printing. In it illustrations, text and typography blend to achieve an unsurpassed work of creative art: the embodiment of the spirit of the Renaissance directed toward the future with new meaning." (Saunders & O’Malley, The illustration from the works of Andreas Vesalius of Brussels, Cleveland 1950) "Containing Vesalius’ s final revisions of the text, this edition is also superior for its enlarged format, improved typography and printing, better paper, larger woodcut initials, and changes to the lettering of the anatomical woodcuts."(Garrison-Morton) "No other work of the sixteenth century equals it, though many share its spirit of anatomical enquiry. It was translated, reissued, copied and plagiarized over and over again and its illustrations were used or copied in other medical works until the end of the eighteenth century."(PMM). Descrizione libro: Basle, Johannes Oporinus, 1555, 1555. Folio (410 x 265 mm), pp [xii] 824 [24] with two folding sheets, with woodcut title, portrait of Vesalius on a6, printer’s device on final leaf, 9 large, 183 median, and 22 small woodcut initials, and c. 220 anatomical woodcuts in the text including 17 full-page woodcuts and 5 large diagrams of the nervous and circulatory systems; small repaired tear without loss, two short tears on folding sheets carefully repaired, one touching a few letters, pp 678-82 with some slight staining, overall a very clean, crisp copy, in contemporary blindstamped German pigskin over wooden boards, with roll borders of German Reformers and mythological figures, lacking two clasps. £110,000A very nice copy of the second folio edition (first 1543) of Vesalius’s epochal anatomy. This second folio edition (there was an unillustrated ‘pocket’ edtion printed in Lyons in 1552) incorporates Vesalius’ revisions to text and some of the illustrations, and is typographically superior to the first edition. The text was reset in larger type (49 instead of 57 lines to the page), the smaller series of initials were recut in larger format with new historiations, the frontispiece was also recut with some changes, and the work was printed on heavier and finer paper, with better presswork. ‘The impression of the woodcuts is often clearer, and more beautiful than in the previous edition; some of the figures have been somewhat improved upon in the cutting and in the lettering. The presswork is more splendid; the fancy initials throughout are larger and more beautiful and also adorned with drawings different from those of the first edition. This second [folio] edition therefore has. advantages over the first on account of additions in the text and in the illustrations and particularly on account of its more splendid makeup’ (Choulant-Frank p 182).The full-page woodcuts feature 3 skeletal figures and 14 écorché figures depicting the muscles; there are 5 large diagrams of the circulatory and nervous systems, 25 middle-size woodcuts, 10 depicting the abdomen, 2 the thorax, and 13 the skull and brain, and numerous smaller figures of anatomical details and organs. In addition to the redesign of the smaller initials, a new large initial letter V was cut for the preface addressed to Charles V and for the beginning of the fifth book. ‘Since the scene within it is that of Apollo flaying Marysas, it has sometimes been said that the new letter represented a direct attack on Vesalius’s critics.‘In respect to diagrams and illustrations, two general alterations are apparent in the revised edition. First, an effort was made to place the illustrations so as to improve the appearance of the work. This meant that in some instances where, in the first edition, several illustrations were crowded together, in the second they were spaced, sometimes further removed from one another by rearrangement of the text relative to the illustrations, sometimes even placed on different pages. Second, the letters on the figures were made to stand out more clearly. This was accomplished by reworking the black to remove shadows that, in the first edition, frequently made it difficult of read the letters.‘Examination of the individual illustrations indicates that some were removed, others reworked, and still others replaced by completely new figures. Thus the delineation of two umbilical veins disappeared from the revised Fabrica and the full-page illustration of the "venous man" was so thoroughly reworked that it seems almost a new figure. An illustration of a bone drill is an example of a wholly new figure not found in the first edition’ (O’Malley, Andreas Vesalius pp. 272-4 et seq. and p. 463-4 n. 20 for a detailed analysis of alterations to illustrations and text).Provenance: small seventeenth-century stamp on title, crossed swords within a wreath with initials ‘B.V.T.’; marginal annotations in a neat sevententh-century handAdams V605; Choulant-Frank pp 181-2; Cushing VI.A.3; Durling 4579; Garrison and Mor. Descrizione libro: Basel, (Johannes Oporinus, Juni 1543)., 1543. Folio (428 x 282 mm). Woodcut title-page depicting a lecture hall with the dissection of a corpse, woodcut portrait of Vesalius (aged 28) with a dissected arm on *6v, woodcut initials (depicting cherubs conducting dissections or robbing graves), woodcut illustrations (some full-page), woodcut and letterpress double-sided folding plate at m3, with another sheet signed m3, woodcut and letterpress folding plate at p4, woodcut printer's device on final verso. Early 18th-c. speckled calf with contemp. marbled pastedowns and later endpapers, spine with raised bands marked by double gilt fillets, red morocco lettering-piece, edges speckled but retaining contemporary title lettered on foot of text-block. Modern slipcase. First edition of the most famous anatomical work ever published. - With the publication of "De humani corporis fabrica" (when he was only twenty-eight) Vesalius revolutionised both the science of anatomy and how it was taught. In his preface, he describes his disappointing experiences as a student in Paris and Louvain, stating his intention to reform the teaching of anatomy by giving in this book a complete description of the structure of the human body and thereby drawing attention "to the falsity of Galen’s pronouncements". Vesalius also broke with tradition by performing dissections himself instead of leaving this task to assistants: the striking and dramatic title-page illustration shows him conducting such a dissection, his hand plunged into a female cadaver (striking in itself, as only the cadavers of executed criminals could be legally dissected and female criminals were rarely executed), surrounded by a seething mass of students. - The "Fabrica" is also revolutionary for "its unprecedented blending of scientific exposition, art and typography" (Norman). Vesalius took great care with every aspect of his book: his letter to Joannes Oporinus, reproduced in the prefatory matter (*5r-v), discusses the layout of the book, the system of reference between text and image, and the delivery of the woodcut blocks. The numerous and elegant illustrations, including the title-page and the frequently disarming woodcut initials, were entrusted to Jan Stephan van Calcar (1499-1546), a student of Titian who had also worked on Vesalius's "Tabulae anatomicae sex" of 1537-38. The beauty and accuracy of these woodcuts led to frequent piracy, despite Vesalius's attempts to protect his work with various privileges (as stated at the foot of the title-page). - B2-5 and 3-4 transposed. Light dampstaining to upper corner of textblock. Title-page very slightly soiled with a few small holes (one affecting image) and laid down; a few small marginal paper repairs (that on Q5 touching image but without loss). A few small abrasions and repairs on lower cover; extremities repaired; small tear to head of spine. A tall copy. PMM 71. VD 16, V 910. Cushing VI.A.1. Eimas 281. Norman 2137. Wellcome 6560.
