Descrizione libro: New York Macmillan 1936, 1936. First Edition, First Issue. Signed by Margaret Mitchell on the flyleaf. Laid into the book is what is considered the finest Clark Gable letter extant, an amazing reflection all about Gone With the Wind. Dated January 25, 1960, it is a Typed Letter Signed in blue ink by Clark Gable, on his printed stationery with the original stamped envelope, which is written to the News Editor of the Atlanta Constitution newspaper, Mr. Actor Cordell, Jr., who had asked for GableÕs remarks on Gone With the Wind twenty years after the release of the film classic, and to which Clark Gable wrote this amazing response: "Dear Mr. Cordell: I have received your letter of December 29 and will answer your questions in the order which you ask them. - Yes, it does seem like 20 years. - I feel about GONE WITH THE WIND as being one of the greatest pictures ever made, not because I played a leading role in it, but because of the great story, the way the story was brought to the screen, the production it received, and because of its very fine cast. When I look at the picture now after 20 years, I still feel it is one of the finest motion pictures ever made. - Yes, I think Rhett Butler is my favorite role, and I am associated more with GONE WITH THE WIND than with any of my other pictures. - As to suggestions for the casting of Rhett in the forthcoming stage musical, this is a little out of my line. I am sure the producer and the director will be completely capable of finding a very fine Rhett Butler. - Of the late Margaret Mitchell I would like to say that in addition to writing a wonderful novel she was of great help to me before I started working in the picture, advising me of the manner in which she thought I should attempt to portray Butler. I listened to her and followed her advice, and fortunately for me everything she told me was right. Naturally she was the one to whom I went for advice, because she was the one who had created the character. I am forever grateful to Margaret Mitchell. - Most sincerely, (Signed) Clark Gable.Ó This letter was written shortly before Gable left to film his final motion picture, the late masterwork, The Misfits, co-starring Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift directed by John Huston using an original screenplay by MonroeÕs husband, Arthur Miller. Gable died in November a few days after shooting his last scene. This articulate and fascinating letter, therefore, remains his final observations about Gone With the Wind. The book, itself, is a near fine first edition in original cloth in a very good first issue dust jacket with some minor expert restoration by a paper conservationist. A truly historic piece enclosed in a very handsome custom morocco and cloth custom box. Codice libro della libreria 13197J

Descrizione libro: Macmillan, New York, 1936. Cloth. Condizione libro: Collectible; Very Good. A VERY SCARCE EXAMPLE OF 1 OF THE 500 PRE-PUBLICATION COPIES SIGNED BY MARGARET MITCHELL(!!). Prior to the release of the May 1936 1st edition, Macmillan had Mitchell sign 500 sheets, which were then bound into a small number of "May 1936" 1st printings and sent off to select influential booksellers Macmillan was hoping would help drum up interest in the heavily-promoted new novel. This copy was sent to Robert Saltmarsh, managing partner --and eventual owner-- of Hutchinson's Bookshop, a venerable bookstore founded in the mid-19th century and located in downtown New Bedford, MA. ALSO INCLUDED WITH THIS COPY ARE 2 WARM, VERY REVEALING LETTERS (one dated in year-of-publication, the other in 1940) addressed to the same bookseller, Robert Saltmarsh, who wisely tucked away both the book and the letters for years. In these letters, Mitchell reveals, among other things, how much she enjoyed her time in New England --both as a young student at Smith College and years later as a visiting world-famous author-- and also how much the firestorm of a reception to her novel took her by surprise ("You see, it comes as a surprise to me that anyone should like it. I wrote it about ten years ago and I did not think very much of it. I thought so little of it that I never submittted it to any publisher. In fact it was so well hidden that when the Macmillan Company man was here and wanted to see it, the house had to be torn up to find it. And I let him have it with fear and trembling and nearly had a stroke when he bought it. So you can understand my pleasure at a kind word!" [from the June 1936 letter]). A remarkable tone of humility --and gratitude to Robert Saltmarsh for having written her an encouraging letter early on-- suffuses both her letters and seems, in its innocence and sincerity, almost unheard of today. The book has held up very nicely: handsomely and professionally re-bound (probably in the 50s) in a beige buckram. Bright, bold lettering at the front panel and bright gilt-lettered author and title labels to the spine. A dozen or so clean new endsheets bound-in at the front and rear as well. A blotch the size of a dime below Margaret Mitchell's signature and, below that, several lines in ink mentioning the 2 letters from Mitchell to Saltmarsh. Several minor tape stains as well along the original endpapers and half-title but, beyond that, the text is tight and clean and free of any writing or markings. Thick octavo, 1,037 pgs. With these 2 deeply personal letters AND its signed, pre-publication status, this copy can legitimately be considered a truly significant --and rare-- example of "Gone with the Wind". Signed by Author. Codice libro della libreria 6444

Descrizione libro: The Macmillan Company,, New York:, 1936. 222 x 152 mm (8 3/4 x 6"). 4 p.l., 1,037 pp. Very pleasing gray crushed morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with single gilt rule border, raised bands decorated with stippled rule and flanked by gilt rules, panels with intricate gilt fleuron centerpiece and gilt titling, gilt-ruled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Upper right corner of back cover slightly soiled (with a series of short, thin, faint parallel lines about two to three inches in length descending from the top edge), spine slightly and evenly sunned to a pleasant light brownish-gray, trivial internal imperfections, otherwise very fine. This is the desirable first state of the first printing of Mitchell's perenially popular epic romance, perhaps the best-known American novel of the 20th century, our copy with the author's distinctive tidy signature on what is clearly the original flyleaf at the front. Sangorski & Sutcliffe, one of the premier English bookbinders, did a considerable amount of work for American booksellers, including Brentano's, and while the design here is restrained, the quality of the leather used and the precision of the finishing are first rate. FIRST EDITION, First Issue (with "published May, 1936" on the copyright page and no note of further printing). Front flyleaf SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Codice libro della libreria ST11741d

Descrizione libro: New York: Macmillan, 1936, 1936. Hardcover. Condizione libro: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN FIRST ISSUE DUST JACKET of Mitchell's Pulitzer-Prize winning epic of Scarlett O'Hara's near-mythic love affair with Rhett Butler, one of the most popular and enduring novels in American literature. Gone With the Wind "appeared to overwhelming popular and critical acclaim in the summer of 1936. It immediately broke all sales records, and it won the Pulitzer Prize the next year. David O. Selznick's 1939 film version, which won ten Academy Award nominations and seven Oscars, including best picture, guaranteed the novel's immortality, and the novel itself remains a popular classic. Twice since its original publication it has reappeared on the New York Times bestseller list, in 1986 and again in 1991. It also has been translated into every major language of the world and many more obscure tongues. It has spawned a minor industry in publishing and spin-offs (from Mammy dolls and china to housing developments), and Mitchell's language has become a part of American lingo. In all probability it is the most popular and widely read novel in the world and the most famous novel in the English language" (American National Biography). New York: Macmillan, 1936. Octavo, original cloth, original dust jacket. Book near-fine, dust jacket with light edgewear and a little bit of soiling; upper flap fold clipped. An exceptionally well-preserved copy.
