In the original first issue dust jacket (priced "$4.95" and with Jack Kerouacs five-word blurb on the front flap). Despite these flaws, this is one of the best copies weve seen of this title, notorious for condition problems. This book, based on Kesey's experiences working the night shift in a mental ward, was the basis for the 1975 film starring Jack Nicholson; it was one of only three films to win all of the major Oscars (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress & Screenplay). First edition, first issue (with "that fool Red Cross woman" on p. 9, and "Its the plump Red Cross woman named Gwen-doe-lin, with the blond hair " on pp. 85-86). Codice libro della libreria 3052
ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST.
Descrizione libro: Viking Press (1962)., New York:, 1962. First edition of the AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. First issue, in the first issue dust jacket, SIGNED BY KESEY. A classic book made into a classic movie directed by Milos Foreman, starring Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher and Danny DeVito. The story evolved from Kesey's time working as an orderly at a mental health facility in Menlo Park, California. Not only did he speak to the patients and witness the workings of the institution, he took psychoactive drugs as part of a project. Time Magazine named the book one of the 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. The book is bright and fine with just a few tiny spots on cloth; in an equally bright dust jacket with expert restoration to several small chips and tears. A sharp copy of the first-issue book and jacket--which is getting scarcer signed. Codice libro della libreria 49508

Descrizione libro: Viking, NY, 1962. Hardcover. First Edition. Kesey's landmark first book, a pivotal novel of the literature of the Sixties, which helped to shape a generation's attitudes on issues of authority, power, madness and, finally, individuality. The early printings of the U.S. edition contain text that was later excised and changed after a lawsuit was brought against Kesey and his publisher by a woman who was a nurse at the institution which Kesey used as a model for the novel; she charged him with portraying a character that was based on her (and had the same first name) in a disparaging manner. The character was rewritten after the third hardcover printing, and later editions, including the mass market paperback and the "definitive" text in the Viking Critical Library Series, have an alternate character in her place. Fine in a very good dust jacket with wear to the spine ends, a bit of spine and edge fading, and two small pen marks near the front spine fold. Codice libro della libreria 027218

Loose bookplate inscribed by Ken Kesey in red ink "For Ruth, Ken Kesey." On the copyright page, Kesey's name is blacked out with black marker. Fine with Very Good Plus Dust Jacket. Jacket has small creases at top. Original Price(18 s net) intact. Protected in archival plastic. Kesey's first published novel is based on individuals whom he met while working the graveyard shift in the psychiatric ward in a Veterans' Administration Hospital in California. On the surface, the book is an indictment of the mental health system and psychiatric practices of the era. But, just as importantly, Kesey is attacking conformity and celebratiing individualism. Kesey was a major counter-cultural link between the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the hippies of the 1960s. The novel was made into an Oscar-winning movie starring Jack Nicholson in 1975. The picture swept all "Big Five" Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor (Jack Nicholson), Best Actress, Best Director , and Best Adapted Screenplay. One critic argues the novel belongs on the same shelf with 1984, Brave New World, Farenheit 451, Clockwork Orange, Darkness at Noon and Cool Hand Luke.; Signed by Inscribed by Author(s).
