A VERY GOOD copy, a little rubbed to the extremities but the cloth clean and bright. The contents are without the heavy foxing often associated with this title. Complete with the GOOD supplied first edition dustwrapper which is rubbed, nicked and creased but with very little in the way of loss. The underside of the wrapper show some tissue repairs to several closed tears where tape once was. Inscribed by the author in black ink on the title page "E. M. Forster / For William S. Gray". "Mindful of the imponderables of human conduct, alert to all the reciprocal misjudgments and the wearying false appraisals we make as a matter of course, he looked at empire and saw its weak foundations. . . . In his other great novel, Howard's End, Forster directed us to "only connect." What he demonstrates here, in a story of the greatest and saddest subtleties — and comic subtleties, too — is how nearly impossible that is to do."
