First Edition. "TWAIN, Mark. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Hartford: American Publishing Company, 1876. Square octavo, publisher's three-quarter brown morocco, peach endpapers. Housed in a custom chemise and half morocco clamshell box. $69,000.First American edition, first state of one of the great masterpieces of American literature and a true touchstone of American childhood, in the exceptionally rare publisher's morocco binding. An essential addition to any Mark Twain collection. Only 200 copies were issued in the publisher's three-quarter morocco binding."The first novel Mark Twain wrote without a co-author, Tom Sawyer is also his most clearly autobiographical novel Enlivened by extraordinary and melodramatic events, it is otherwise a realistic depiction of the experiences, people and places that Mark Twain knew as a child" (Rasmussen, 459). Originally published in England (without illustrations), Tom Sawyer arrived at a momentous point in American history: Custer had recently lost the battle at Little Big Horn and America was celebrating its centennial. "Publication of Tom Sawyer was little noticed The book has, however, proved to be one of the most durable works in American literature. By the time of Twain's death, it was his top-selling book. It has been in print continuously since 1876, and has outsold all other Mark Twain works" (Rasmussen, 459). "This was a true boy's book, and surviving copies are proof of how rough little boy's can be on books" (MacDonnell, 40). Also issued in cloth and sheep, only 200 copies were issued in this three-quarter morocco binding. First printing, first state, which "can be quickly distinguished by the fact that the half-title and frontispiece are printed on separate leaves they are printed on the same leaf in the later printings and the entire text is printed on wove paper" (MacDonnell, 40). Also with "THE" on half title in 10-point rather than 14-point type, peach endpapers, preliminary matter paginated [I]-XVI and two blank flyleaves of laid paper at front "copies have been noted with two, three and four fly-leaves present no positive point of issue can be made" (Johnson, 28). BAL 3369. Johnson, 27-30. MacDonnell, 39-40. MacBride, 40. Scattered light soiling, as usual. Small marginal closed tear to page 91, not affecting text. Front inner paper hinge split, binding sound. A nearly fine copy in extraordinary condition, highly desirable in the original publisher's morocco. A centerpiece of any collection celebrating Mark Twain or, indeed, American literature.".

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Octavo. Original red cloth with border and cover design blocked in black and lettering in gilt, cream coated endpapers. Housed in a blue quarter morocco solander box. The true First edition, published on 9 June, thus preceding the first American edition that appeared in mid-December by some six months. Twain chose to have the book published first in London to ensure copyright and perhaps also because he was more highly esteemed in Britain than at home. Oxford conferred an honorary doctorate on Twain in 1907, three years before his death, an honor grander than any he ever received in America. BAL 3367.

Condizione: Very good. First printing. First printing of the classic American children's book about an orphan boy growing up on the banks of the Mississippi River in Missouri, in the expertly restored original cloth binding. While Twain is best known today as the author of canonical children's books like this one and its sequel, HUCK FINN, before TOM SAWYER he was actually famous instead as a travel writer and humorist lecturer. TOM SAWYER was Twain's first novel entirely composed by him (an earlier novel, THE GILDED AGE, was co-authored with his friend Charles Dudley Warner). While it did eventually achieve bestseller status, its initial reception was modest, with a first printing of only 5000 copies. Today its reputation has made it a highly sought rarity in the first printing, as here, and copies in great condition are scarce. Twain bibliographer Kevin MacDonnell summarizes it thus: "This was a true boy's book, and surviving copies are proof of how rough on books little boys can be." 8.5'' x 6.5''. Original blue pictorial cloth elaborately stamped in black and gilt on spine and front board. Peach endpapers, triple fly leaves on laid paper. Publisher's catalogue at rear. [i]-xvi, 17-275, [1], [4] pages. Archival tape repair to long closed tear in gutter of first fly leaf, ink owner name on same leaf and another ink name on title page. Hinges expertly repaired, with some restoration to cloth around corners and toned spine. Faint intermittent soiling to text.

First US edition, first printing, printed on wove paper, versos of half-title and preface blank. "The irresponsibility, the love of odd adventure, and the sense of natural justice as opposed to the village code, which characterize the heroes of this book and its sequel Huckleberry Finn, presented a sharp contrast to the Sunday School or rags-to-riches literature which was then the common fare doled out to children. these books let fresh air into the minds of parents who had shut the door on their own childhood, and they will be classics the world over as long as there are boys" (Grolier American 79). BAL 3369; Johnson p. 27; Peter Parley to Penrod 43; Grolier Children's 100, 41. Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, spine lettered and tooled in gilt, raised bands, covers ruled in gilt, inner dentelles gilt, burgundy endpapers, gilt edges. Wood engraved frontispiece and numerous in-text illustrations by True Williams and others, 4 pp publisher's advertisements at end. Small expert paper repair to single corner on page 39, pages a little toned, an excellent copy in a fine binding.

First edition, first printing, mixed state of the apotheosis of American boyhood. Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco over cloth, gilt topstain. In near fine condition with half-title and frontispiece on the same leaf, with 1875 on the copyright page and 1876 on the title page, and with the 10-point type to the word "THE" on the half-title page, four page publishers advertisements at end. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell chemise and box. Popular and controversial at the time of publication in 1876, Mark Twainâ s masterpiece The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has been adapted into dozens of film, television and theatrical productions. The quintessential tale of American boyhood established one of the most memorable characters in American literature who appeared in three later sequels including Twainâ s other most notable work, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. â The first novel Mark Twain wrote without a co-author, Tom Sawyer is also his most clearly autobiographical novel enlivened by extraordinary and melodramatic events, it is otherwise a realistic depiction of the experiences, people and places that Mark Twain knew as a childâ (Rasmussen, 459).

Hardcover. Condizione: Collectible: Very Good. First Edition. First Edition, Second issue with illustration on verso of half title and pages IX, X, & XII instead labeled XII, XIII, & XVI. Laid in is a card inscribed "Truly Yours", and SIGNED "Mark Twain". The card is of heavy stock and was previously attached to another sheet of paper, the remains of which are on the verso. A glue stain is present on the bottom edge of the card and very minute amounts of foxing are present on card face. The original cloth covers of the book have had the corners professionally touched up and the original spine is professionally refurbished although still age darkened with the gilt considerably less bright than the front panel. There is an ink name on the front endpaper, the hinges have been stabilized with Japanese paper, and the first contents page has a short tear near the gutter. The pages have light age toning, there is some soiling on the rear pastedown and endpaper, the front endpaper has two small tears and a tiny chip, and there is off setting on the second and third front endpapers from a prior occupant and which bleeds through faintly to the illustration and title page. The binding is still quite solid. Signed.

Hartford [etc.]: The American Publishing Company, 1876. 4 pp ads dated 1 Dec 1876. Original blue cloth decorated in black and gilt. First American Edition, second state (i.e. with the frontispiece on the verso of the half-title, rather than on a separate adjacent leaf). Because such copies appear on laid paper, on wove paper, or on a combination of both papers, it is uncertain whether this second state consists of one or two (or possibly even three) printings. This copy is printed throughout on laid paper, and has mispaginated preliminary leaves (Blanck's "arbitrarily designated" state A). In our experience this second state is the variant of TOM SAWYER usually encountered -- though TOM has become somewhat uncommon in any state (much less common than HUCKLEBERRY FINN, for example). Close to near-fine, this copy is unusually bright, including the gilt both on the front cover and on the spine. It does have moderate wear at the extremities, and along the fore-edge of the first two (blank) leaves; the inner hinges are intact. (Obviously the first state is preferable, but a copy in this condition would have a price between $15,000 and $25,000). One of the great classics of American literature, as enjoyable today as it was 150 years ago. Blanck 3369; McBride pp 40-42; a Johnson High Spot ("recognized as one of the supreme portrayals of boy character"). Provenance: armorial bookplate of Samuel Strong Spaulding (1849-1933, of Buffalo and Cooperstown), with his penciled signature dated February 1877.

Hard Cover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First edition, second issue, variant A, printed on laid paper with mispagination of prelims (BAL 3369). Unusually well-preserved (boards are often soiled and/or abraded). Hinges weakening but still holding firmly (this edition is notoriously fragile), one gathering proud at fore edge but not sprung from binding, light creases down front free endpaper, ink name on front paste-down (James H. Finney, Port Jervis NY). 1876 Hard Cover. xvi, [17]-274, [6] pp. Blue cloth, gilt and black titles and decorations. Engraved frontispiece and illustrations throughout text. Arguably the most important novel in the American literary tradition. Inspiration for multiple film, television, and theatrical adaptations, and iconic enough to inspire references in other media as well, from comic books to the popular song by Rush. Tom Sawyer has a nose for mischief. Growing up with his Aunt Polly and half-brother Sid, Tom has a way of looking for trouble. When young Tom Sawyer and his buddy Huckleberry Finn sneak out to the graveyard at midnight for what they deem to be good fun, what they don't expect is to witness a trio of body snatchers robbing a grave?and the consequences thereafter proving to be potentially catastrophic. Corralled by the limits of his small town, Tom Sawyer seeks a life that is unencumbered by rules and curfews. Alongside his buddy, Huck Finn, the duo make their way through what becomes an adventure of a lifetime, and one laden with secret hidden treasure.
