Grolier American 100, 79. A handsome copy of this American Landmark. Tom Sawyer, one of the iconic American heroesthe very type of all-American bad-boywas Twain's rebuttal to the educational boys stories he read as a child in Sunday school. "For once, the natural rights of the small boy were set forth by a great writer who remembered his own childhood . . . These books [Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn] let fresh air into the minds of parents who had shut the door on their own childhoods, and they will be classics the world over as long as there are boys." (Grolier American 100, 79). One of Twain's shorter parodies,"A Boys Manuscript" (1868), which recounts in diary form the antics of Billy Rogers and his love for Amy Lawrence, was the actual seed for Tom Sawyer, but, according to the Literary Encyclopedia, the book falls squarely within the genre of "Bad Boy" literature popular during the last half of the nineteenth century. In all these works, the main character is usually an orphan or becomes one; he usually experiences some type of feverish swoon or sickness; he is often the leader or a member of a gang of boys; he frequently experiences boyhood crushes, often on an older girl; he has a morbid fantasy about an early death; his courage is tested by facing rivals or bullies, and also by a force of nature, such as a severe storm, and order is ultimately restored by an adult rescuing the boy and creating a favorable opportunity for the boys admission into the adult world.
