Descrizione libro: 1755, 1755. 2 vols. in 1. Copenhagen 1755. (40) + 288 + (2) pp. With copperengraved frontispiece, the authors portrait and 159 fullpage copperengravings showing views, costumes, maps, monuments etc. from Egypt. Fol. A very clean copy with a wide margin bound in beautiful contemporary full leather, so called English binding of marbled calf decorated with blind-tooling and gilding. The binding is problably from the bookbinder Georg Julius Liebe's workshop. * A very beautiful DE-LUXE COPY of the first edition printed, on HEAVY PAPER. Bound in a Danish masterbinding in English style, probably by George J. Liebe who settled 1774 as a bookbinder in Copenhagen and from 1746 he was appointed to the Danish Court. He introduced the rococostyle in the art of bookbinding in Denmark. The archaeological interested and artistic talented naval officer Fred. Ludv. Norden undertook in 1737 - 38 on Royal command and expense an archaeological expedition to Egypt. He died, however, before the account of his travel was published, and the work was passed to the Danish Society of the Sciences. It became probably the most magnificent work in the history of Danish book production. The artist Marcus Tuscher was called in to engrave the many large illustrations after Norden's drawings of which a few are carried out by O. H. de Lode. Some of the beautiful initials are engraved by Jonas Haas, who has also engraved the large vignette above the preface drawn by J. M. Preisler together with vignettes drawn by Peter Cramer, who also engraved part of his own drawings. "Det hele Værk er af en sjælden fornem og virkelig pompøs Karakter." (Laur. Nielsen). The greatest 18th century Danish travel book. Famous for both its contents, and its printing and illustrations. Codice libro della libreria 159944

First edition as published by The Royal Danish Society in only 200 copies. Copy in Very Good Condition. In 1737-38, the naval officer Frederic Louis Norden was sent by the Danish government for an expedition to Egypt. Scientific expeditions were the object of extreme interest in enlightened European circle, and at the same time it provided governments international prestige, and possible economic connections. The Danish monarchy supported several expeditions financially, including Carsten Niebuhr's voyage to Arabia in 1761-67, and Norden's journey to Egypt and Nubia. This monumental work is considered as the only detailed survey of Egypt and Nubia by a European and most important prior to the "Description d'Egypt", which appeared after Napolean's invasion of Egypt. The drawings of Norden were published for the first time in London (1741). This work appeared in Copenhagen thirteen years after his death in 1742.[ Blackmer 1210 for the English edition; Hilmy II, 74]. Codice libro della libreria 001671
