Cloth. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Not dated, approx 1934/35. 24pp. Privately Printed. Good/None. Brown cloth boards with some rubbing to edges/spine, a little scuffing/fading. Contents clean and tight but for minor soiling/browning. Gift inscription to ffep reads 'The headmaster & the headmaster's wife. Preaching what they practise. Love Michael'. It seems likely that Michael is the author - possibly a young Sir Michael John Sinclair Clapham, a student at King's College, Cambridg who learned to set type by hand in 1934 and who would therefore have been perfectly placed to privately print this book - this is just speculation though as no author's name is given. This is a short anti-war polemical play in two parts. The first is a two-handed piece with a Student & a Don expounding their thoughts about war and the state of the world over the corpse of a soldier. The Don is trying to forget his horrific experiences in the trenches of WWI, and the corpse is that of a soldier he fought with, who he know from King's College, Cambridge before the war - he refers to him as 'Sometime fellow of King's College'. The student is critical of the Don and his generation for their war-mongering and is veering towards Communism. The second part is called 'The Conversation' and it takes place at an Armistice Day remembrance meeting on Parker's Piece in Cambridge in 1934 or 1935. It concerns an argument between a group of Cambridge students in thrall to Marx's 'Das Kapital' and an ordinary tradesman, and the increasing alarm at the rise of Fascism following the end of the war. The play is loosely dedicated to a group of people listed at the front, all of whom died during WWI or during violent incidents following the war. The first list includes 16 men killed during WWI. The second list includes the names of 10 men who were killed in 1933 during Hitler's rise to power as detailed in 'The Brown Book of the Hitler Terror & the Burning of the Richstag', published in 1933. The final list includes the names of 4 men injured during the rally of the British Union of Fascists (BUF) led by Oswald Mosley, at Olympia in June 1934. The rally involved about 10,000 people, mostly BUF members but also about 500 anti-Fascist protesters. It became notorious for its violence during which many of the protesters were badly injured. The public was shocked by the level of violence employed by the BUF and it marked the beginning of the end for the party in the UK. The basic premise of the play is that war and violence are wrong.

However, he believed himself to be a great poet, and it must be admitted that his poems do have a certain naive charm. It is said that he gave a copy of one of his poetry books away to any customer that bought a sack of potatoes from him. This volume includes a short autobiography, and an interview with the Baptist preacher Charles H Spurgeon. It also includes an extensive & fascinaing catalogue of adverts for businesses in the Penge and London area, as well as further afield. Very scarce.
