(Hall B-3) . ; 8-3/4 x 11-1/8", XIV + 512pp. Textured maroon boards, bright gold spine lettering. ART. This large book contains Volume I and Volume II; it does not contain Volume III. This book covers American art from 1688 to 1874, with Volume I covering 1688-1842, and Volume II covering 1842-1874. The artists are listed chronologically, so that the book reflects the overall history of Americna art and at the same time gives you a close look at each artist. This book does not contain the Index, which is in Vol. III. Artists are presented in order by the year of their birth -- or, in cases where the birth year is unknown, by the year in which their artistic activity began. There are biographical entries on the individual artists which are the backbone of this book. Each biography consists of three elements: one or more full-color reproductions of representative paintings; an article giving information about the painter's education and training, important influences, significant works, critical reputation, and the like; and a chart or graph of financial data based on recent sales of the artist's work. In addition there are essays: Colonial and Early Republican Painting; American Portrait Painting; American Still-Life Painting; American Folk Art; American Marine Art and Ship Portraiture; Seascape - Marine Landscape Painting; Genre Painting in America; American Landscape Painting in the Nineteenth Century; Paintings of the American West; and The Spiral of Afro-American Art. The contributors are Oswaldo Rodriguez Rogue, Mary F. Holahan, Mary Jo Viola, James Bishop, Henry Neimann, A. J. Peluso, Jr. , J. Gray Sweeney, George M. Cohen, Robert F. Looney, Patricia Janis Broder, and Edmund Barry Gaither. Hundreds of full-color reproductions beautifully reproduced on smooth, very white paper which enhances the brilliance of the colors.
