Sir John Betjeman's 'Guide to English Parish Churches' (of which there are over 16,000 in England alone) was first published in 1958 and immediately established itself as a classic. It is a work of loving scholarship, providing a guide to a selected list of parish churches, buildings chosen for their atmosphere and aesthetic merit, the main criteria for inclusion being, in the late Poet Laureate's words, whether a church contains even one object ' worth bicycling twelve miles against the wind to see'.
This incomparable guide has now been thoroughly revised and updated, whilst keeping the arrangement by county, the county profiles and Betjeman's famous Introduction, a superb and moving evocation of the history of parish churches. The glossary of architectural terms and drawings has been supplemented, there are over 60 paragraphs and a new section on the parish churches of Wales.
Those for whom this book is already an old and much loved friend will find it in its revised form even more invaluable; those, whether believers or unbelievers, who are not yet familiar with it will need little encouragement to appreciate the inspiration and wealth of information held here.
John Betjeman was, and still is, one of England's best loved poets. He is most famous for his light verse, including 'New Bats in Old Belfries' and 'Summoned by Bells', a verse autobiography, must of which satirises modern taste and upholds Victoriana. He was made Poet Laureate in 1972 and in the same decade became a television star, presenting his own popular series on architecture. He was, with John Piper, general Editor of the Shell Guides, a Member of the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments and an associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Betjeman died in 1984.
"The introduction written by John Betjeman is one of the most brilliant pieces of historical reconstruction I have ever read."
SIR ARTHUR BRYAN
"Without exaggeration, this book holds enough information and inspiration for a life time of church visiting."
TIMES EDUCATIONAL SUPPLEMENT
"Much scholarship and loving care has gone into the preparation of this excellent book, and it should find a place in every car pocket for handy reference."
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
"Even had it broken no fresh ground Mr Betjeman's introduction would still make this book unique."
SUNDAY TIMES
"A vade mecum of church-lovers for many years to come. The whole book is prefaced by an editorial essay which is pure gold."
TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT
"The Parish Churches of England are even more varied than the landscape. The tall town church, smelling of furniture polish and hot-water pipes...; the little weather beaten hamlet church standing in a farmyard down a narrow lane, bat-droppings over the pews and one service a month...; the churches that are easy to pray in and those that are not, the churches whose architecture brings you to your knees, the churches whose decorations affront the sight..."
JOHN BETJEMAN
