Five years after the historic decision of the Church of England to have women priests, a discernable shift has taken place in Christianity in the English speaking world. Far from only affecting the Anglican world, it has irreversibly changed the relationship between the two most major Christian churches.

Led by the former Anglican Bishop of London, Dr Graham Leonard, disaffected Anglicans sought to move en-masse to the Catholic Church. Although this movement has yet to be seem in great numbers, this book argues that the ‘Anglo-Catholic’ voice within the Church of England has been weakened to the extent that it will still become truly Protestant for the first time since the Reformation. With unique ‘behind-the-scenes’ stories, this is a startling assessment of the most major realignment to take place in Christianity for centuries.

Dalla quarta di copertina:

The Church of Englands historic decision to ordain women to its priesthood has forced a dramatic realignment of Christianity in the English speaking world. In the space of five years it has brought irreversible change into the heart of Anglicanism, and transformed its relationship with the Roman Catholic Church.

In this radical book, William Oddie gives an insider’s account of the origins and possible future development of the 'Roman Option', in which disaffected Anglicans seek to move en masse to the Catholic Church, and argues that the Catholic bishops must be ready to respond boldly to the real crisis for Anglicanism which lies ahead. He looks to a future in which the Anglican Church has the potential to achieve unity – and become itself a focus of unity for Protestant Christianity – for the first time since the Reformation.

'The Roman Option' is a rich mixture of revealing insights, historical detail and passionately committed writing, and should prove essential reading for anyone with an interest in the future of the Church.

An engrossing read. It offers a large amount of insiders’ information. Oddie is particularly good on the psychology of the Anglican and Catholic churches at what was a critical moment in their histories, and he captures very well the mood swings of the participants.
JONATHAN PETRE, 'Daily Telegraph'
journalist and author of 'By Sex Divided'

This is a very good book. William Oddie writes well. The long-term value of this book is as historical record of an important series of events in English church history. He argues with vigour and verve – it is unlikely that such a readable book on the subject could be written by anyone else.
