Alan Furst’s haunting wartime thriller was one of the best-reviewed books of 1995. Now it is to be reissued in B-format, in a new cover style, alongside his new paperback, The World at Night.
In 1939, as the German army ravages his country, Captain Alexander de Milja enlists in the newly formed Polish underground and undertakes the first of many daring acts of defiance and disruption: transporting Poland’s gold reserves to safety hidden on board a refugee train. As the war drags on and Europe suffers under German occupation, duty takes him from Warsaw to Paris and the frozen Ukraine – enduring a life of dark shadows and perpetual deception, always on the run, always just one step ahead of death.

‘One of the best novels of the year... Furst’s ability to recreate the terrors of espionage and combat is matchless.’
Robert Harris, Daily Mail
‘Brilliant... you can almost hear the chained wheels of the Gestapo car on the snow, the whack of bullets in the moonlit Polish forests, the quietness of occupied Paris by night... a compelling work.’
Observer
‘Excellent... beautifully written, intensely atmospheric and dramatically convincing. The Polish Officer is a work of quiet subtlety that will niggle in the memory far longer than most frenetic novels of espionage.’
Sunday Times
‘Surely among the most convincing war books of our time.’
Sunday Telegraph
