A gritty and realistic novel about life in an inner-city comprehensive, by an award winning author.
Set in an inner-city comprehensive, Tough Luck explores the trials and tribulations of life for pupils and teachers. Centring on three Year 9* pupils – all loners for different reasons. Nasim – newly arrived from Pakistan; Twagger – the school truant who only turns up for a hot school dinner and Sprat who wants love and attention, not money and gifts, from his single-parent father. Their ‘right-on’ and understanding teacher, Mr Bead, together with the rest of his class all play their part in making this a thought-provoking and gripping novel, which will be painfully real to many readers.
· updated from Year 3 in the original novel.

Born in Knotty Ash, Liverpool, Berlie Doherty is the youngest of three children. She has been a social worker, a journalist, a teacher, and, for the past fifteen years, a writer.
Berlie has twice won the prestigious Carnegie Medal, for ‘Grannie was a Buffer Girl’ in 1987 and for ‘Dear Nobody’ in 1992. She lives in the Derbyshire Peak District.
“We’ve got a lot to answer for, teachers. We lump a load of kids together in a room and keep them there for hours on end and we expect them to do all kinds of things. We never stop to think what’s really going on in their heads.”
Mr Bead is worried. Twagger hasn’t turned up for school again; Nasim doesn’t seem to want to make friends and Sprat’s ready for a punch-up. Three loners and it may take more than just the concern of 9B’s form teacher to sort them out.
Gritty realism that’s both dramatic and poignant, from an award-winning author.
