New in paperback, this photographic portrait of the great city captures the changing face of the capital through the 20th century. Rich and varied, this is truly one of the most fascinating collections of images of London ever assembled.
The Times London : A History in Photographs a collection of images – the majority from the photographic archives of The Times – taken over a 90-year period by an enormous team of photographers. Together they provide a kaleidoscope of gritty images of London, more lively and more down-to-earth than previous collections.
These images display an unusual portrait of the nation’s capital: most people would recognise Trafalgar Square, but very few have seen it from Nelson’s point of view; many people have seen the chimneys of Battersea Power Station, but not its cavernous interior. The multicultural nature of London is evidenced in the street markets, the rough sleepers, the commuters and the population eating and drinking in the bars and cafes. Along with Ian Harrison’s informative and witty text, the sum is a fascinating portrait of a multi-faceted city.

Ian Harrison had three careers before turning to writing – working as a theatre lighting designer, as a fish wrangler for a German advertising agency, and as Scenic Supervisor in Europe’s largest television studio. He then downed tools and picked up a pen, first as a researcher for television documentaries and then as an author. He has worked on two other titles for Times Books, and this is his fifth book on the subject of London.
New in paperback, this photographic portrait of the great city captures the changing face of the capital through the centuries. Long gone are the days when being a Londoner meant being born within the sound of Bow Bells. London as a city, a place in which to live and work, has attracted people from all over the world, giving it possibly the most ethnically diverse population of any city worldwide.
Accompanied by Ian Harrison’s insightful text, the photographs include such immediately recognisable London icons as the black cab, 20th-century landmarks such as the London Eye and images of key London events throughout the century. Ordinary Londoners are pictured at work and at play, while the mulicultural nature of London is evidenced in the street markets, the rough sleepers, the commuters, and the population eating and drinking in the bars and cafes: the sum, a fascinating portrait of London in all its glory.
With fantastic images from the photographic archives of the The Times, The Times Picture Collection: London covers all aspects of London life, history, and architecture, from the ancient to the modern, and whimsical to the deadly serious.
