(Thus far most writing about Yeats and his circle has taken the form of either personal memoirs or academic criticism. Frank Tuohy adds the skill of the novelist to the accuracy of the biographer to give us a revealing portrait of Yeats, his family and friends, his many-sided activities, and the conditions under which he lived and wrote. The text is enriched with 16 pages of illustrations in full color and 60.in black and white.
The author begins with the state of Ireland in Yeats's childhood, and the isolation that encouraged the uneasiness about his own identity that never left him and that links him with the literature of today. We learn of his development as a writer from his early days in Dublin and London, and the influence on him of Pre-Raphaelitism, William Morris, Ruskin, Pater; of Wilde, Beardsley, and Dowden; the Irish dramatists, Shaw, Synge, O'Casey; the groups dominated by Pound, Wyndham Lewis, and James Joyce, down to Oxford in the twenties and the Auden generation.
Yeats's involvement in politics, his activities as a member of the secret Irish Republican Brotherhood and as a fascist at the opposite pole, are carefully studied. He is shown as the inspirer of the Anglo-Irish revival and the main force in the movement that produced the Abbey Theatre and revolutionized the modern drama, as a respected public figure, and as a winner of the Nobel Prize.
Yeats, said T. S. Eliot, was one of those whose history is the history of our own time. Now Yeats is just far enough away for a detached appreciation illuminated by living memory)
