We learn of his development as a writer from his early days in Dublin and London, and the influence on him of Pre-Raphaelitism, William Morris, Ruskin, Pater; of Wilde, Beardsley, and Dowden; the Irish dramatists, Shaw, Synge, O'Casey; the groups dominated by Pound, Wyndham Lewis, and James Joyce, down to Oxford in the twenties and the Auden generation.
Yeats's involvement in politics, his activities as a member of the secret Irish Republican Brotherhood and as a fascist at the opposite pole, are carefully studied. He is shown as the inspirer of the Anglo-Irish revival and the main force in the movement that produced the Abbey Theatre and revolutionized the modern drama, as a respected public figure, and as a winner of the Nobel Prize.
