PreSchool-Grade 2-- A big city apartment-house roof provides the sole locale for a magical day for Emily and Grandma. Lugging picnic basket and laundry basket, the two emerge from the dark, narrow stairs onto the bright, windswept roof where Grandma hangs freshly washed laundry as Emily hands her clothespins. The two play hide-and-seek, dance with each other and the wind to the honking of horns far below and a piano being played in the distance. The laundry is dry and smells of the fresh summer air as they prepare to leave the top of the world in the glow of the setting sun. Both author and illustrator are drawing on nostalgia in presenting this idyllic day to children who may not know about rooftops, clotheslines, and, perhaps, not even snuggable grandmothers like Emily's. No grit or other pollutants on this roof or in that blue sky, but that's all right--it's good to escape total reality now and then. Ray's muted watercolor-and-pencil illustrations are smudgy and soft, in keeping with the warmly remembered day. This gentle story vibrates with the delight the characters feel in each other. --Virginia Opocensky, formerly at Lincoln City Libraries, NB
