Readers around the globe have been enchanted by the worlds Ann Patchett has illuminated with her prose, from the drama of opera in Bel Canto to the mystery of the Amazon in State of Wonder. Now Ann is shining the light on her own world in this collection of entertaining and heart-warming essays, sharing stories of her childhood, her early writing, personal travels, life in Nashville, and the important friendships she s made along the way. Both wide-ranging and deeply personal, Ann s essays reveal the big experiences and little moments that shaped her as a daughter, wife, and writer, the collection overflowing with thoughtful advice and emotional wisdom

A tumultuous childhood and determined teacher sparked Ann s initial desire to be a writer, a desire and skill that only grew through years of workshops, freelance articles, essays and novels. Ann s writing took her from New York City to the jungles of Peru, from a disastrous marriage to a happy one, and eventually brought her back to Nashville, TN, into her very own bookstore, Parnassus Books. From the excitement of selling her first novel to the backlash she experienced from her relationship with Lucy Grealy in Truth & Beauty, Ann shares the details, the beginnings and the battles, of a writer s life. The friendships she forged along the way, the beauty she came to appreciate and the hardships she learned the most from are the heart of these essays, revealed through the elegance and strength of her prose. This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage is a wonderful combination of literature and memoir, Ann s writing and adventurous life of writing proving to be an irresistible combination for fans and new readers alike.
