Carl Hoffman is a contributing editor at National Geographic Traveler and the author of The Lunatic Express, which The Wall Street Journal named one of the ten best books of 2010. He is a former contributing editor at Wired and Popular Mechanics magazines and his stories about everything from how 9/11 changed Buzkashi, the national sport of Afghanistan, to a Kurtz-like American bush pilot in the Congo, have appeared in ESPN, The Magazine, Outside, Smithsonian, Men's Journal and National Geographic Adventure. He has reported from more than 65 countries and has won four Lowell Thomas Awards from the Society of American Travel Writers. He lives in Washington, D.C. and has three children.
