Descrizione libro Cloth. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. In this book the author traces the history of the law and social attitudes about rape to the present day and interviewing numbers of victims, policemen, lawyers and judges provides a vivid portrait of rape in Britain today. Are the police unsympathetic to the victim? Are there many false accusations? how does society behave to someone who has been raped? Is the average rapist different from the man next door? How do victims recall their experiences. In uncovering the facts the author points out that in terms of the punishment it provides, the law assess rape as less serious than only treason and murder, so ecouraging the totally unrelalistic expectations that women should fear rapw almost as much as murder and resist to within an inch of their lives. This expectation colours the reaction that the majority of the men acquitted of rape are in fact guilty but freed because huries feel 'he's done it, but she asked for it and we don't blame him'. But rape is an abomination not because it is an assault on innocence, but because it is an assault on freedom and once society and the law regonize this by reducing the sentence for rape, unless the rape is accompanied by other bodily inuuries, justice is more likely to be done. Written with wit and insight, this book brings to light both the gruesome reality of rape and the information which could bring about a badly needed change of attitude. 208 pp. Plastic protective covering around D/J.
