This is the story of the great American railroads, a story of breathtaking technological ingenuity, pioneering idealism, hard driven labour and powerful greed. By the end of the last century five transcontinental railroads linked the Atlantic Coast with the Pacific Ocean, and thousands of miles of track criss-crossed the West which, only a few years before, had been largely uncharted and unexplored.

Dee Brown was born on February 28, 1908, in Alberta, Louisiana and died in 2002.
