9780099909705: Winner Take Nothing

Written when Hemingway was at the height of his creative powers, the stories in Winner Take Nothing glow with the mark of his unique talent.

Hunters, wives, old men of wisdom, waiters, fighters, women loved, women lost: they are all here, living on the raw edge, making love, facing the inevitable reality of death.

The characters, the dialogue, the settings, the remarkable insight could have come only from Hemingway's imagination. As an introduction to his work, or as an overview of the themes he developed at greater length in his novels, it is a stunningly successful collection. From one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century.

Descrizione del libro:

A stunning collection of short stories from the Nobel Prize-winning author of a A Farewell to Arms

L'autore:

Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in Chicago in 1899 as the son of a doctor and the second of six children. After a stint as an ambulance driver at the Italian front, Hemingway came home to America in 1919, only to return to the battlefield – this time as a reporter on the Greco-Turkish war – in 1922. Resigning from journalism to focus on his writing instead, he moved to Paris where he renewed his earlier friendship with fellow American expatriates such as Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. Through the years, Hemingway travelled widely and wrote avidly, becoming an internationally recognized literary master of his craft. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, following the publication of The Old Man and the Sea. He died in 1961.

Descrizione libro Arrow. 1 Paperback(s), 2006. soft. Condizione libro: New. First published in 1933, following A Farewell to Arms and Death in the Afternoon, this collection of 17 stories includes "A Way You'll Never Be"; "Fathers and Sons"; and "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place," which James Joyce called "one of the best short stories ever written." It also includes three stories not in the original collection, "The Capital of the World"; "Old Man at the Bridge"; and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," in which a cowardly hunter, shown up by his guide and ridiculed by his wife, comes to terms with his fear of death. Writing in a terse, stripped-down style, first as a reporter and then a novelist, Hemingway was an enormously influential author from the 1920s through the 50s, and won both the Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes. J.D. Salinger, Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski, and Jack Kerouac all acknowledged their indebtedness to him, as did non-authors like artist Edward Hopper, whose Nighthawks at the Diner was inspired in part by Hemingway's short stories. 167.
