Mastering Pixels:3D--A Comprehensive Guide is a good start toward not only learning but exploiting this Macintosh-only 3-D-graphics-and-animation application.
Nine chapters focus on using the program itself, starting with interface basics, basic and advanced modeling, shading and texturing, and rendering. The book then goes over animation techniques, cameras and lights, and particle systems. One of the better chapters, written by Pixels president Andrew Bryant, covers the Pixels internal scripting language. Scripting is a powerful feature in Pixels:3D, but it's not simple--nor do most users need to use it--so it's unclear why this subject appears as early as chapter 2. The subject is much more suited to an appendix, especially because chapter 1 explains the basic interface and chapter 3 covers basic modeling.
The book only devotes one chapter to animation, a shortcoming since Pixels:3D is a powerful animation package. However, the text does explain most of the basics of animating in Pixels:3D, including how to use the velocity curves in the Graph Pane and Timeline.
If you don't already own Pixels:3D, the companion CD-ROM has a full-featured demo version. It is a time-limited demo, but all features work. The CD-ROM also contains more than 100 shaders for mapping onto surfaces and more than 60 Pixels:3D project files for perusal.
Mastering Pixels:3D is good for new users, or for anyone who wants to try out the application with some hard-copy tutorials at hand. Experienced users may not learn much, and most of the examples don't really show off the application as well as they could. But this is a good beginner's book for a noteworthy application. --Mike CaputoFrom the Back Cover:
