Published by Auto-Graphics Inc., 3201 Temple Avenue, Pomona, CA 91768-3200. What a pleasure to review the newly-enhanced Auto-Graphics' GDCS , a CD-ROM index to government publications cataloged by the US Government Printing Office. The service represents all GPO records for publications distributed since mid-1976 (approximately 300,000), on a single CD-ROM. A 50-page indexed User Guide gives excellent documentation, illustrations, and search examples. Monthly, bimonthly, and quarterly subscriptions are offered. IBM PC XT, AT, 386 or compatible microcomputers will work with 640K RAM and MS-DOS 3.20 (or higher) and CD-ROM extensions. The occasion for this review is a May 1992 revision to the previous service. In May, Auto-Graphics started to remove duplicative serials availability records by combining those that contained unique information about individual publications into single collective records. Auto-Graphics obviously has a feel for the reference requirements of librarians (see R&R , June 1992 for a review of The Columbia Granger's World of Poetry on CD-ROM , another excellent and similar user-interface product created by Auto-Graphics and published by Columbia U. Press). The typical display (which can be customized locally by any library) includes detailed bibliographic information, with full descriptive cataloging and subject headings. An alternate display offers full MARC cataloging, including prices for publications, where available. Boolean searches augment author, title, subject and keyword access (including keyword access for contents notes). (Note: in late 1992 A-G began to add GPO "shipping list" records, a feature not reviewed here.) The data is machine-edited, with monthly authority control for names, series and subjects. Seven different number search keys are provided. The service effectively replaces the Monthly Catalog , which could be used for current indexing if one selected only bimonthly or quarterly subscriptions ($950 and $650 per year respectively). GDCS certainly belongs in every document depository collection and should also be acquired for academic and public library reference departments. Toll free information at 800-776-6939.
