17th-century mathematician, Pierre de Fermat claimed to have solved an old puzzle: that the square of a whole number can be split into 2 other squares of whole numbers - 5 squared equals 4 squared plus 3 squared - but this couldn't be done with cubes. Why not? Fermat's solution was lost, and only recently has a British mathematician been able to solve the puzzle. Amir Aczel tells the fascinating story of this scientific mystery.
