Sinossi
The 'two cities' are London, steadied by the old-fashioned habits of business and Paris in the time of the French revolution with its howling mobs and bloody executions. The novel explores the gulf between revolutionary ideals and methods, and, through the characters of Charles Darnay, Sydney Carton and Lucie Manette dramatises the choice between changing society and changing oneself. This stirring tale of resurrection, renunciation and revolution is one of Dickens's best and most popular novels.

Charles Dickens (1812-70) was a political reporter and journalist whose popularity was established by the phenomenally successful PICKWICK PAPERS (1836-7). His novels captured and held the public imagination over a period of more than thirty years. He is considered one of the greatest novelists in the English language.
Richard Maxwell is Professor of English at Valparaiso University. He is the author of The Mysteries of Paris and London (1992).
