9780140515930: B is for Bauhaus: An A-Z of the Modern World

A tool kit, done in A–Z form, for understanding the world around us through the way we design and use things. Covering subjects that range from authenticity to Grand Theft Auto to Dieter Rams, Deyan Sudjic’s latest book has been called "a master class in musing on modern design." Though it is organized in A–Z format, it is not a dictionary or an encyclopedia in the strictest sense. Rather, it is an essential tool kit for understanding the world through emblematic examples, both historic and contemporary, from the field of design. In stand-alone chapters, Sudjic explores concepts as a whole, specific movements, or specific objects and people. The result is a kaleidoscopic view of the profound way in which design—both good and bad—has colored the modern world and influenced our interactions with popular culture. Woven throughout are surprisingly nostalgic remembrances and intensely personal perspectives on a life in design by someone who clearly lives and breathes it. Sudjic demonstrates not only a passion for the subject, but also an ability to illuminate what is most inspiring and intriguing about the way we create.

Review:

"In fluid, frank prose, Sudjic covers every letter of the alphabet at least once—B is for both Bauhaus and blueprint, and C heads up five chapters, on cars, chairs, [Pierre] Chareau, collecting, and critical design. The essays are sure to interest even the most informed design aficionado, as they are by turns entertaining and erudite, rooted in a deep understanding of the various forces that have influenced the aesthetics of the modern world (see 'P Is for Postmodern'), but not above a gossipy look at behind-the-scenes drama (see 'U Is for [Jørn] Utzon,'about the design of the Sydney Opera House)." -Architectural Digest

"Dictionaries, of course, are large, all-encompassing volumes that convey information dispassionately. In contrast, this is a small book reflecting one man's preferences. . . . personal anecdotes, however, mak[ing] up some of the best entries." -Architectural Record

"Not since Herb Lubalin’s U&lc folded in 1999 has there been a publication like this one." -Architects + Artisans

“Deyan Sudjic, presents a revealing and personal compendium of the objects and products that embody how design-both good and bad-has influenced our experiences and shaped the modern world. Presented alphabetically, each chapter hits on a concept or object, which Sudjic expands into a discussion of themes formed through his own personal experiences and insights." –Dexigner.com

It s also about the city as seen from the rear view mirror of Grand Theft Auto V; digital ornament and why we value imperfection. It s about drinking a bruisingly dry martini in Adolf Loo s American bar in Vienna, and about Hitchcock s film sets. It s about the modern world of fashion, technology, design and art.
