9780141191577: Collected Poetry (Penguin Classics)

A new collection of John Donne's verse, from the witty conceit of "The Flea" to the intense spirituality of his Divine Poems

Regarded by many as the greatest of the metaphysical poets, John Donne was also among the most intriguing figures of the Elizabethan Age. A sensualist who composed erotic and playful love poetry in his youth, he was raised a Catholic but later became one of the most admired Protestant preachers of his time. Reflecting this wide diversity, Collected Poetry includes his youthful songs and sonnets, epigrams, elegies, letters, satires, and the profoundly moving Divine Poems composed toward the end of his life. From joyful works such as "The Flea," which transforms the image of a louse into something marvelous, to the intimate and intense Holy Sonnets, Donne breathed new vigor into poetry by drawing startling metaphors from the world in which he lived.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Descrizione libro Penguin UK, 2012. Paperback. Condizione libro: New. 'Take me to You, imprison me, for I, Except You'enthral me, never shall be free, Nor ever chaste, except You ravish me'John Donne was one of the greatest and most daring poets in the English language, whose work reinvigorated the traditions of Renaissance verse with its wit, wordplay, elaborate conceits, colloquial tone and often shocking imagery drawn from everyday life. This new collection of Donne's work shows the huge range of his verse, from startling, intimate love poems such as 'The Sun Rising' and 'The Good Morrow' to his forceful Holy Sonnets, as well as epigrams, elegies, satires, letters, hymns and memorial verses. Brought together, they illustrate fully the complexity and originality of a unique poetic genius who combined ardour and intellect in equal measure.Ilona Bell's introduction to this new collection considers Donne's life, critical responses to his work, the different audiences he wrote for and his radical use of form and metaphor. This edition also includes a chronology, detailed notes and a further reading list.Edited with an introduction and notes by Ilona BellGeneral Editor: Christopher Ricks. Paperback.
