FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT (1849-1924) was born in Manchester. She had a very poor upbringing and used to escape from the horror of her surroundings by writing stories. In 1865 her family emigrated to the USA where she married and became the successful author of many children's books including Little Lord Fauntleroy and A Little Princess.
LAUREN CHILD, winner of the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize and the Kate Greenaway Medal, is best known for creating the characters Clarice Bean and the BAFTA-award-winning Charlie and Lola . She also works as a UNESCO Artist for Peace, raising money and awareness for deprived children all over the world. She was awarded the MBE in the 2009 New Year Honours list for her services to children's literature and art. Lauren's picture books include The Princess and the Pea and Goldilocks and the Three Bears (co-created with Polly Borland) and Who Wants to be a Poodle, I Don't.
